AJ Johnson Accused of Sexual Assault

How about for once we as VOLNATION don't buy into speculation and rumors and let this thing play out. We need to support AJ until proven guilty. He has been a rock for us now if it comes out he did something like that then by all means bash away. But let's not turn this thread into a Gruden like thread.

This would never make even a police report status in Tallahassee, it would be filed in the dust bin of he said she says.

From where I sit, in a system that believes that one is innocent until proven guilty, the privacy of both parties should be of the utmost importance. The way it stands, especially with rape shield laws, there is really no penalty for an accuser who might have behaved vindictively. Yes it does happen, no I am not suggesting it happens often. I simply think it is a perversion of the foundation of everything we hold dear to allow one party to be completely tried and convicted in the court of public opinion without the tiniest shred of evidence released to the same judge/jury and executioner beyond speculation and an accusation.

I have never understood why anyone being booked gets the pleasure of being all over the local newspapers, before there is any proof of guilt beyond an accusation. Without going into too much detail, my wife was charged with a misdemeanor. The police came to our house on a Sunday and arrested her for the supposed crime that happened days earlier. Over a span of several weeks, my wife went through some significant humiliation of having anyone with access to the local newspaper see that she had been arrested and booked for a crime. There were humiliating conversations she had to have with her employer, some employees and customers. When we finally went to court to talk to the D.A., the charges were dropped with a half-assed apology. The newspaper later ran a retraction but I thought that was a total and blatant invasion of privacy rights that should be protected. We were basically left with no recourse. It just wasn't worth spending tens of thousands of dollars to fight a protracted legal battle over a simple misdemeanor charge that was dropped.

i don't know how to fix it. While the trial at least has a high burden of proof, the defendant is often already tarred and feathered before his day in court in almost every meaningful way (job, relationships, money spent on defense, etc). More than that, should the defendant be found not guilty by a jury of his/her peers, that rarely if ever removes the stain.

Don't misconstrue any of this as being anti-victim. The problem is that the victim will never be whole again. There is nothing that can repair a victim of any violent crime except time, lots of counseling, and a close knit support group. On the same token, there is no justice gained for society or the victim by the public crucifixion of the defendant before guilt has been determined. Its a terrible situation all around, with people and their lives caught in the gears of a machine that doesn't always have the best interest of any of the parties in mind. That's just my two cents.

We moved into a new house last year so I subscribed to an email service that would notify me of anyone arrested within my zip code. I did it so that I would have an idea of anything I would need to know about to feel safe. Turns out that a few months later a bill was passed making the service, and others like it, illegal for exactly the reasons you describe. I'm not sure if the law only applies to GA or if it is a nation wide thing. I'm sorry that happened to your wife but hopefully some of this is beginning to be resolved.

One question. Did this alleged incident happen at the same apartment complex where last summers party happen? If so, I hope once the new athletic dorm is built, living there becomes mandatory until eligibility is exhausted.

If he did happen to make her mad and it built up to this. I can only imagine what gets guys in this situation. I know some of my buddies has always had that stupid hit it and quit it and leave mentality literally within minutes after. Probably doesn't always go over well with girls that are already drama queens. People like that have it all wrong both party's.

I think it's where I lived during my college years. I heard the place had gotten crazy (not that it was a church camp when I lived there).

The police are under-educated hicks. That's why they're police.

A cop with an education is a fast food worker.

That's a mighty broad brush there, bc. I've known several, totally professional, upstanding police officers through the years, including my favorite uncle, God rest his soul. You might want to rethink whom you call an "under-educated hick."

Agree. That was a ridiculous statement. A lot of good cops out there doing a thankless job.

How about most of the UTPD. At least when I was in school. They'd send out these crew cut roided 20 year olds to bust up parties. Stupid and full of testosterone, saving the world by beating up one drunk college kid at a time. Ignoring the armed robberies, sexual assaults, and rapes that took place on a weekly basis in the fort of course. No, I think under educated hicks was pretty fitting in my experience with that police force

Usually, that sort of statement is made by those who have an undesirable history with law enforcement. In my experience law enforcement officers treat you with the amount of respect you generally ask for and earn.
