I will get flamed but i dont care

I can appreciate the difference of opinion here but I've been quietly reading this board for some time and get the general impression that those who want to see Phil out are the same folks who have unrealistic expectations for the VOLS. That's why I "came out swinging".

I'm a TN native, '96 UT grad, a second generation VOL (both my folks graduated from UT in '61) and love the VOLS as much as the next guy/gal. I too want to see them win. But I agree with the original post in this thread and just get tired of the same old Phil bashing.
Thats why its a message board. We all have varied opinions. Phil has been getting alot of miles out of that 98 championship lately. It's just been to long. A conference championship is not out of the realm of realistic goals, we just haven't met them. Love him, hate him, admire him whatever. The fact remains we are in a long drought and the longer it goes it does irrepairable damage to our overall perception nationwide. In short it hurts recruiting when a team fly's under the radar all the time. You have to showup and get a bleep ever now and then or people forget who you are or were.

We need to work line heck to improve our tiebreaker performance.

I guess that means never putting yourself in the situation where another teams controls our destiny.

I guess it is to much to ask to beat Florida, Bama and the dawgs.................................

i would simply like to make out of September a little more often than we have in the past just to see what it feels like to really control our own destiny.

A little more talk about fundamentals in August rather than October from the coaches, and you could get your wish...

Maybe I am out of touch with Tennessee football living in Ohio but it does not seem to me that Phil treats Florida and Bama like Tressel does Michigan.

I mean freakin' Meyer has Tennessee week!

That would be nice wouldn't it. I'd settle for being little more competitive in our rivalry games. Getting kicked in the teeth early is never fun.

just my opinion, but i truly think one of the reasons we have this perception nationally about us is that our big game of the season is in September. you hear it every year "we're going to find out alot about Tennessee and/or Florida........" and more times than not, we've been relegated to backseat status as a result of not being able to win that game.

it's the reaosn why FL/SC, FL/GA, FL/Aub are always big later on in the season. those games STILL mean something.

We are already in 2nd place and in automatic catch up mode, and thus relegated to "also ran".

Beat FL in september and guess what? the TN/GA game is now HUGE. TN/Bama is HUGE.............TN/SC is HUGE.

anyway, you get my drift.

Phil didn't get the memo.

No one. Just pointing out that I'm a VOL and not some troll just trying to piss folks off.

Phil didn't get the memo.
oh, he got the memo. he has, more times than not, just played that game very tight. that game more than any other is why he has the reputation of "playing not to lose". he fears losing it so much, he's afraid of trying to win it.

that may be overblowing it a tad, but we have, in many, not all, cases approached that game with a reactionary mentatlity. let's feel 'em out......take what the def. gives us......protect against the big play........yada, yada, yada........whereas our opponent more times than not has been the "go for the throat", "put your foot on the floor and don't look back" type mentality.

there have been spots where we have shown some aggresiveness, and that's good. the problem is, it's the equivalent of how a trap door spider hunts. BOOM and it's over. go back your hole and hope for the next cricket to mistakenly walk by.

agh, i'm in no mood to talk about this today. why did i even start?:banghead2:

Its the pucker factor. Phil tightens up so much you couldn't sqeeze a greased bb up his arse. That mentality is one of the reasons i've never been one of phil's biggest fans. Just what you said jake came to a boil in this years florida game. Never has the pucker factor backfired like it did in that game.
