Drastic action needed on Ebola

Yep..you cant make this stuff up. Potential ebola on a plane or ship is as welcome as a fart in a space suit. Its like six degrees of separation from ebola.

I mean damn, has no one ever read Clancey or Cussler (fiction I know but...) airlines/cruise ships/conventions are always where the terrorist start their plagues FOR A DAMN REASON, what posses a person who as been even the least exposed to go to any of these places? I mean hell if you have even the least sense of concern for people you wouldn't be playing Russian roulette like that.

If anyone gets any symptoms, they will have to sink the Carnival Magic to the bottom of the ocean. How do you disinfect an entire ship of that size? Who would want to cruise on it after this?

Another thing about this cruise ship thing: apparently, the media in Belize has reported that the person was showing symptoms:

"Channel 5 Belize reported that it has: 'Confirmed with representatives of the Ministry of Health that they have indeed received a report that there is at least one passenger on board the cruise ship, Carnival Magic, showing symptoms similar to that of the Ebola virus . . . .'"

Belize News

If that's true, good lord. Of course, all of the US media outlets are saying she has shown no symptoms. Who to believe . . . .

What an Effing joke...Obama names lawyer and former Al Gore chief of staff Ron Klain as the ebola czar. Another lawyer will fix it...right.

I'd be curious to know if it was the SAME person.

We keep getting all these false alarms and people overreact. As someone else posted yesterday, if every time someone gets the sniffles its going to be on CNN and result in quarantines, its going to be a loooong flu season.

His supervision of the allocation of funds in the stimulus act -- at the time and incredible and complicated government undertaking -- is respected in Washington.
He has clerked for the U.S. Supreme Court and headed up Gore's effort during the 2000 Florida recount.

He does not have any extensive background in health care.

This is surely a hoax

Not sure if you're pointing me out but I'm not dogging the CDC. What I do find idiotic is that one nurse that worked on Duncan was diagnosed with Ebola so that automatically puts the other nurses that worked on him on very high alert. The second nurse called the CDC and told them she had a low grade fever and they proceeded to tell her it was ok to get on the plane. That is absolutely negligent in my book.

I assumed the CDC would have automatically taken jurisdiction over Duncan and his treatment in the Dallas hospital and not have left it to a hospital and staff that was obviously untrained and unprepared. It seems that only now in light of recent events they plan on doing that for the remainder. When dealing with a contagious, exotic, and deadly disease the CDC should always be in control.

Don't bring facts into BOT's superiority party! The CDC is all over this! They have us covered to the hilt!

Oh, by the way, they are a big organization and can't be expected to be competent.

Indeed. The language I originally quoted makes it ambiguous, but if you go to the article, the report clearly states that it's the same person. It says this:

"The patient exhibiting Ebola symptoms has been confirmed to be a nurse at a Dallas hospital traveling with her husband."

Of course, that doesn't mean that their reporting is accurate.

My wife asked me if "we should be concerned about the potential outbreak here" last night. I initially blew it off with a snarky remark that I don't anticipate us touring Africa any time soon.

The regional aspect to me is a bit alarming though to be honest. This whole deal with cases found in Dallas can be disturbing. Then you hear about some 700+ people being contacted for testing that were aboard a flight.

Not sure how cocky I will be in dismissing this as this continues. Why in the hell don't we have cures for crap like this yet?

Given the rate of air travel in this country, it is regional to all of us. One patient on one flight and now hundreds of people potentially exposed.

To address McDad, I'd think this admin would be a bit more cautious in using titles and terms directly related to anything Soviet-esk. But maybe not.

The federal govt trying to get out in front of this now is alarming. You can criticize the doomsday theorist all you want, but the potential is obviously there. Like a Tom Clancy novel played out in real life.

The potential is there for Russia to spontaneously decide to end the world doesn't mean it's likely or going to happen. You can't worry about it everyday.

We've had the chance to develop vaccines or medicine for this since 1976. Honestly the medical industry just didn't care because, up to this point, we haven't had a outbreak like this nor had it ever left Africa. There was no money to be had to warrant investing in one.

**** just got real in the vader household

Dear GCISD Parents,

The health and safety of our students and staff is our most important consideration. We work diligently to keep you informed of important matters affecting our schools and district, and we have information to share with you.

District leaders confirmed this afternoon that three GCISD students from two different families were on round-trip flights between Cleveland and Dallas with the second health care worker who recently tested positive for the Ebola virus. Two students attend Silver Lake Elementary and one student attends Grapevine Middle School. One of the students also has a sibling at Grapevine High School who was not on either flight.

We also have confirmed that an employee was on the October 10 outbound flight to Cleveland. The employee has contacted the Centers for Disease Control and has been assured that they are not monitoring anyone from the outbound flight. The employee is centrally deployed and does not work directly with students.

None of the students, the employee, nor any family members, are exhibiting any symptoms and are not considered contagious. According to health care officials, individuals are not contagious unless symptoms appear. It is important to note that we do not have any confirmed or suspected cases in GCISD. The families have decided to keep their children home from school as a precaution and the employee also remains home from work this week.

Our local, state and national health officials assure us there is no significant risk of possible transmission of the virus through indirect contact. The Centers for Disease Control has not recommended we perform additional cleaning or implement specific protocols at this time as they assure us this situation is very low risk. Nonetheless, district leaders have decided to proactively implement high-level disinfecting of Silver Lake Elementary and Grapevine Middle as the students on the flights attend those schools. Special cleaning equipment and extra personnel are being brought in to accomplish this task in one evening. In addition, the buses that served these campuses this week have been taken out of service as of this afternoon until a thorough disinfection can be completed tonight.

The district’s decision to go beyond recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control was made solely out of consideration for the safety of our students and staff members, and there is no imminent risk to your child. We believe it is safe to continue having school as normal and we assure you that if we had significant concerns, we would cancel classes accordingly. Classes will continue at all GCISD schools on Friday as scheduled.

National and local health officials are emphasizing that the risk of contracting Ebola is very low. The Ebola virus cannot be transmitted through geographic proximity alone or casual contact, or through air or water. The virus is spread by direct contact – through mucous membranes or broken skin – with the body fluids of a person who is showing symptoms of the illness.

GCISD is working closely with regional health officials to remain up-to-date on current information. We have registered nurses at each of our campuses and they regularly train and practice protocols and precautions when dealing with infectious or contagious diseases. Our staff members will continue encouraging proper hand washing and educating students about healthy habits, and district crews will continue disinfecting environmental surfaces as a proactive step. Enveloped viruses such as Ebola are susceptible to the majority of the commercially available disinfectants in the U.S. In GCISD, our facilities crews use a cleaning product to disinfect surfaces that is effective against enveloped viruses.

We have posted facts and information about the virus and the district’s measures to reduce the likelihood of exposure on the district and school website. On this page we also have provided links to fact sheets from the Tarrant County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control. I encourage you to take a few moments to read these facts and to arm yourself with accurate information about this global health concern.

We understand that you may have questions and it is our goal to keep you informed and to update you regularly as health situations unfold. As always, parents are encouraged to use their best judgment regarding the health and safety of their children.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to keep you informed and provide safe learning environments for our students and staff.

Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Superintendent
