"Since a white police officer shot the unarmed black 18-year-old on Aug. 9, voter registration booths and cards have popped up alongside protests in the city and surrounding neighborhoods. The result: 4,839 people in St. Louis County have registered to vote since the shooting; 3,287 of them live in Ferguson."

The most possitive news I've heard out of Ferguson since this all started.

Pretty dreadful imo. Registering to vote because of some perceived situation is not exactly good news. Most responsible Americans register at 18 as the law allows and is done so because they are a part of a society that fought for the right to, in some small way, be involved in a greater good.

More people voting is a good thing. That said, more informed objective voters is better.

Amen.

Just watching the typical man on the street interviews where people can't answer the simplest questions about current events, national history, or current political leaders really causes me to question the wisdom of a true democracy (opposed to a representative republic). Added to that, it seems many of the provisions the founders put in place to protect citizens from themselves have gone away or have been diluted... it just really concerns me.

Direct election of the president by popular vote doesn't help either. Also, many of the recall provisions that help when the citizens get it wrong, have been diluted tremendously. I'm starting to think we should really rethink citizenship. Should every idiot on the street have a right to vote?

No we need stricter requirements to be eligible to vote.

Yeah but you can't legitimately complain about the racial makeup of the elected officials if you actually vote for them...

Sounds good, but totally false. The 18-24 yo voting block has only reached 50% participation one time. That was in 1972, when the voting age was lowered to 18. Since then, that has been the least likely group to actually cast a vote. The older you are, the more likely you are to be involved in the electoral process.

Why are republicans so adamant about allowing tax payer dollars to be used to raise unwanted and unloved children? Is it because they love raising the national debt so much?

I don't have a dog in this fight at all. Personally, if a woman wants to have an abortion, it is between her and God. But I don't want to pay for it... at least not as a method of birth control... she gets one on the taxpayers.. then after that she gets them tubes tied. If the "pro-lifers" want to deny a woman that "right" to an abortion then they are out of line imho and THEY should raise that unwanted child.. OF course all the people I know that have adopted have been put thru quite a ringer in that process... I don't see how you get from the argument to your statement about raising the national debt to pay for those children. That is a bit of a stretch.

If you think women use abortion in place of birth control, then you're a complete idiot.

And it's simple. It costs tax payers billions of dollars every year to raise unwanted children. It's only a couple hundred for an abortion.

Too bad we can't apply that same logic to gang bangers. For just 50 cents per person we could eliminate all of them and make society safer and reduce welfare spending. But I guess it is easier to kill unborn children since they can't fight back.

If you want to kill gang bangers, simply legalize drugs and prostitution. And terminating a pregnancy is the humane thing to do.

I have no words for this. I'm sure every abortion in this country is due to the mother being at risk and not just because they don't want it.

it's $10 a freaking month. Eventually personal responsibility needs to become an issue in this country. My taxes shouldn't be going to support your irresponsible lifestyle and decisions.
