Cheaper tuition, probably closer to home, and gives the kid some time to figure life out before transferring to a 4 year where the stakes are much higher.
I attended CC for my FR year because an older gentleman in my hometown set up a trust fund to where all graduates from our HS could attend 100% free. They even cut us a gas check to make the 30 mile drive from our hometown to campus. I hated every minute of it but to this day it was the best thing for me. I went in thinking it was going to be like high school all over again. Didn't study for exams, barely did my readings etc. When I got my first mid-term progress report and I was sitting with a B, two C's and a D after graduating 5th in my HS class I realized I wasn't in HS anymore. I can only imagine what it would've been like if I was in Knoxville and living on my own that 1st year if it was that bad while living at home with no distractions.
