'15 TN DE Kyle Phillips (UT commit 1/3/15)

McGraw and Jefferson never really wanted to come to UT from the start. McMillon was never really on the radar in terms of UT recruiting (many have referenced scheme). Phillips and Richmond are still very much in play.

Jefferson never wanted to come to UT? First I've heard that.

WR is not a position of need as long as we keep Preston Williams in the fold...With Rico McGraw, you had the Byron DeVinner interference....Of the players you mentioned, we really just need Richmond and Phillips - and it's not over yet for either of them if we can get their OV's and it looks like we will for Richmond. As far as Phillips is concerned, we need to have a better than expected season and hope Ole Miss tanks. If that happens, our staff can emphasize that aside from their fluke 2013 class, their recruiting has not been very good at all.

"As long as Williams stays in the fold". A lot easier said than done..you know nothing is a sure thing in recruiting.

McMillon is absolutely a need. If AJ & Curt leave this year (or even if Curt stays) our LB depth is super thin after Bates Weatherd & JRM.

Yeah, I don't think UT is really hurting for CBs at this point. I remember an article quoting the UT staff saying they wanted (1) lockdown type CB in 2015 and the article said they got that in Miller. They may take a 2nd, but IMO that in no way says they are hurting.

Let me preface this by saying that I absolutely want Phillips. That said, I don't think we're hurting for DEs either.

You like to talk numbers...look at the underclassmen DEs on the roster and add them to the DE commits we currently have.

Sophomores:

3: Vereen is starting and J. Miller and L. Lewis seem to be coming on.

Redshirt freshmen:

1: Kendal Vickers. Haven't heard much about him, but he's young and has plenty of time to develop.

True freshmen:

3: Barnett is starting. Hendrix is getting some minutes here and there. Both of these guys look like future stars. And Joe Henderson is planning to redshirt.

That's 7 underclassmen on the current roster.

Add in the 2 commits, Ford and Butcher, who both look like very good prospects (plus D. Jackson who is a bit of a wildcard), and I don't think losing Phillips hurts terribly bad.

The only glaring need ATP, IMO, is OT. Assuming we get Tuttle, recruiting quality OTs becomes priorities numbers 1, 2, and 3 in my book.

That's true but he has been committed for a year now and Jefferson is just not in the same stratosphere as Williams as a prospect. Obviously, the staff disagrees with your assessment of McMillon. They haven't given him more than a passing glance. We just need Richmond and Phillips and Tuttle.

Our coaches never seemed to put any effort at all into recruiting McMillon. That tells me that either there was something there they didn't like (bad fit for the scheme, poor academics, character, who knows) or they were informed very early on that he wasn't coming to UT and they didn't need to waste their time.

Aside from that, I disagree somewhat on our depth at LB. Elliot Berry and Jakob Johnson are there now. Gavin Bryant looks like he is going to redshirt. People have also been talking about Cortez McDowell getting a look at LB (though I haven't seen that position change confirmed by any "reliable" sources). That's 3-4 potentially quality LBs in just one class without even counting Bates. Add in the two current commits, and I think we're ok.

We need to keep recruiting and get a couple more quality prospects next year of course, but I don't see much reason to be worrying about depth at LB.

Would be absolutely brutal if we miss on Phillips, Richmond, McGraw, McMillon, & Jefferson.

Seems like there's a very good chance we will too. Sucks. Really kills all of the "own the state" talk Butch was preaching last year.

Have you already forgot about how bad things were before he got here? Do you remeber Heron, Jalen Ramsey, and Kimbow who all 3 never even considered us? Sadly you're not going to win them all. But for two season in a row we are bringing in 2 5 stars, probably 3 this year. Recruiting is moving in the right direction.

I don't think UT ever really pursued McMillon. I know Whitehaven's LB coach, and we spoke several months ago. He insinuated that we weren't involved. I believe McMillon fits a 3-4. He is a big LB, who probably isn't great at DE. With possible moves of Johnson, Berry, and maybe McDowell, depth may not be a problem. Plus, Sapp is someone they would want over McMillon.

Also Reeves-Maybin, Cecil the Diesel coming in... eh not worried about LBs.

My understanding is that McMillon is a good, smart kid. I think scheme was the issue.

Since when are we thin at LB? We're young, no doubt, but there's not many LB corps in the country that I would trade ours for. Futuristically speaking.

And LOL at Maggitt going pro after this season.

Yea Maggitt seems too top heavy right now. He doesn't have the same balance or change of direction that he had. Rather see him at 245 and playing standing up. I wonder if they wanted him to gain the weight because they didn't know what they had in Barnett and Hendrix? Of course that may just be his genetics.

I'm not sure but he's not even close to the same speed he was in 2012. Your theory on bulking up is probably correct iyam.

Keep in mind the rust of missed game time. He looked much better in OK game and gave OT some problems

This. He was the victim of at least one holding call, as well. He was about the hit the QB, when all of a sudden he was snatched backwards. The replay showed the OT grabbed the back of his jersey, and the ref was standing right there...smh!

Slive probably told the SEC officiating crew that they would be in trouble if Tennessee beat Oklahoma after the Sooners crushed Bammer in the bowl game. It would embarrass the SEC. The crew was ordered to turn their heads on obvious calls.

Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

Bates, Austin Smith, EB, Weathered, Bryant..

I think we are good at LB but not great. Wouldnt hurt to take another if we miss elsewhere.

Starters next year probably > Weathered and Bates OLB and JRM inside?

If we dont grab another this class we will need at least 3 next year.

Quite possibly the 2 dumbest posts in the history of VolNation. Dead serious.

Anyone that REALLY believes that officials and conference leaders don't play favorites and take sides is living in a dream world. I sat behind a SEC official that was a KY grad several years ago at a TN - Kentucky game that made several comments about disagreeing with calls on the field that were clearly called correctly in Tennessee's favor. Also, don't forget the horrible call in the end zone by the Vandy grad official that gave Florida a TD. He was banned from calling TN games. Many of the bad calls I've seen in the past few years (especially since Kiffin was here) have to be from officials that have a vendetta against Tennessee. To argue that people don't play favorites is dumb, you never see a boss play favorites between employees?
My post that you commented on was actually said as a joke but I had to reply to your "dumbest post" claim.
