Questions/Information for those attending the SECCG in Atlanta

There are 6,000 things on a 5 year old's mind. I'd be proud he wants to go, but I wouldn't take my 10 year old to the SECCG.

Not only is downtown Atlanta dangerous after dark, LSU fans are notorious for throwing beer and other objects when they score. Personally, I think my son will be ready for a non-home game at about 14, at the earliest.

I don't know about the danger. My dad took me to Braves games at Fulton County Stadium and that was thirty years ago when the neighborhood was a lot sketchier than it is now. I think you'll be fine.

LSU fans, however, are not always on their best behavior, and many are very poor sports. You should be okay at a neutral site, but I went to one football game in Tiger Stadium to see the Vols play, and I will never go back. Personally, I'd take my own child to an SEC CG.

if you are around LSU fans, you can use that as a teaching device, you can be like if you dont do your homework and dont do well in school, you turn into one of those

I'm sure people have been to Compton and never been shot, does that make it not dangerous?

No, just b/c it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean there is no potential. There are incredibly too many homeless people and thugs walking around in Atlanta to say it isn't dangerous to be walking around with children.
When you actually live here you will be qualified to offer factual knowledge on my city. And at an event like this there will be more cops here than at Krispy Kreme!

Now, Chattanooga.....that's another story. Those crazies at Moccasin Bend could destroy the world!!!!:eek:lol::eek:lol:

I wouldn't be as worried about the crime in ATL as much being in an 80K person crowd. If you were separtated from your 5 yo would he know what to do? I'm waiting until mine are old enough to not panic and find a police officer before I take them into a large crowd.

You never plan on getting separated, but it happens.

Man, shoot, I wish if I were to ask my parents for SEC tickets when I was 5 for Christmas, they would have laughed. I think they would still do the same today. :birgits_giggle:

if you think downtown ATL is still that dangerous, it's obvious you haven't been there in about ten years. I have never agreed with anything volmanbill said, which is odd considering only one letter differentiates our monikers, but he's right here. downtown atl for the seccg will only be dangerous for the five year old if you let go of his hand and you lose him amongst all the people.

i'm also pretty sure when i was five i didn't know 6,000 things, much less have them all on my mind at the same time.

My wife and I took our 10yro son and 13yro daughter to Atlanta Thanksgiving to watch the Colts/Falcons. We had a great time. Our seats were in 301 row 10 and they were good seats. We were pulling for the Colts and didn't have anyone be rude to us. (suprised at the large number of Colts fans) The Stands were mostly all blue by the 4th qtr.

We went with friends to Indy last year and they took their 5 yr old. He slept thru most of the second half (boring game against Buffalo) Yet he said it was the best time he had ever had. (go figure)

You know your child's maturity level and need to make your own judgement. Hard to compare one 5yr old to another.

We went to WWE in Atl back in Sept which was at the Phillips Arena (basicly right next to GA Dome) Rode the Marta Train in from the outskirts of town (which was a little scary to start) but all in all it was a great experience also.

Our first pro game was in Jax and we were Titan fans. Kids were 7 & 10 at that time. They wore their UT orange and we only saw about a dozen other TN fans the whole day. The crowd there was really obnoxious and language was bad. I wouldn't take them back to Jax.

I'll second that. The Dome and immediate surrounding areas will be crawling with police - I wouldn't worry.

Make sure, however, that your son stays close to you, and if you take MARTA, let the initial rush of people get out of there first before taking the train.

Another tip on MARTA I have used before. There will be a big crush of people going one way after the game, but not many people going the opposite direction. You can get on going the opposite direction, get off after a stop or two, and come back the other way.

Anyway we could get a sticky with info on where to get tickets, parking, accomodations, drankin', etc.?

Perhaps the "scalping tickets" thread could be merged in.

Thanks and Go Vols

In general, I wouldn't recommend heading further West on the East-West line after the game. That will take you out to Vine City, Ashby, West Lake, and Hamilton Homes. Not the nicest of areas.

If necessary, just hang out in the Dome area or the CNN Center for a little bit before getting on MARTA.

Yeah take him to the game.

There will be some language and stuff he shouldn't be around, but in this day and time you can find that stuff anywhere.

Just be sure to talk about what to do if separated. I would hold his hand while walking in a crowd. Those 5 year olds can disappear in a heartbeat. It may be a good idea to let him carry your wifes or someone elses cell phone as well just incase you get separated so he can call you.

y'all go and have fun

just get a good old fashioned leash, haha just kidding. cell phone would be a great idea. also pick a spot to meet in case yall do get seperated

If you'd take him to a Tennessee game, take him to the SECCG. The crowd is the only problem you'll need to deal with.

Downtown Atlanta is only "dangerous after dark" if you wander off out of the well-policed areas. We took our son ice skating at Centennial Olympic Park last winter after dark, and he wasn't even two yet then.

That's a very good idea. We've got some locals who can offer some insight on where to go, how to get there and what to do. I'll merge some threads and stick this at the top.

This thread is going to appear disjointed prior to this post, but at least all the info is in one place.

Looks like I'll be driving in Saturday morning and heading back to Bammerville post game.

Where's the best place to park/hang pre-game. I'm not at all opposed to parking and riding the MARTA.

Would mid-town be a good option for this?

Here's a map of MARTA showing all the stops. The Dome is one stop to the west of the central hub (Five Points).

Is the CNN Center connected to Phillips Arena at some point? I walked through a mall-like place to get into Phillips Arena a couple years ago to see a concert. I think that was the CNN Center but can't recall.

When you say go to CNN Center to look for tickets, do you mean IN the CNN Center or out on the streets around the CNN Center?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Yes its the same building. BTW scalping is not legal at CNN center. Yes you will see it, but be careful of cops, they'll arrest you and the seller, and take the money and tickets.

I always stay in Buckhead. I always hotwire or priceline a Hotel. This time I got the Marriott Residence Inn (All suite hotel) for $69. My buddy is a cop down there so we may ride to the game in his car. But if we don't I will be taking the MARTA. I have taken it dozens of times and have necer had any problems. Well except for the one time that I saw a Tranny's giant package on the train.
