Huh? You have a corrupted memory. Were there some good players? Yes. But not much if any more than what Jones inherited from Dooley. With the departure of Berry, Crompton, Scott, etc in 2009, Dooley was left with what from Fulmer?
Those teams primarily had upperclassmen recruited by Fulmer. A big part of why he was let go was that his recruiting effectiveness had dropped off so badly. The trajectory of the program when Fulmer was fired is EXACTLY where it ended up. Kiffin nor Dooley could pull it up... but it was Fulmer that put the program in the ditch.
Fulmer had his day. They were great years. Proud years. But both he and UT held on too long.
If you are that badly undermanned then it is very difficult to "adjust". You can use gameplanning to stay in games for awhile but eventually you can't hang.
By the time he was fired, Dooley's issues went far beyond being unable to finish.
I am for Jones getting at least a 3 year shot. I want him to succeed. I agree that he needs to win 6-8 games this year AND that that is a reasonable expectation if he's a quality coach. But if you are going to complain that Dooley's teams didn't show up for the 2nd half against teams like Bama and Oregon... then how exactly can you give Jones a pass when his teams didn't show up for the 1st qtr?
I agree recruiting on Fulmers part was a problem I wouldnt agrue that, but would mention that just the shock of having a really bad really with Fulmer record wise is what pushed him out of UT. Could he have came back the next year and performed well probably.
The corruption of the program being led by Kiffin, followed by Dooley, and the change of AD's are all legitimate reasons to give Dooley and even Butch some pitty. But I, on the other hand, dont know all the information on AD's and dont know all the facts and do not even want to act like I do as many of the people on VN do. Also, people on Volnation by far do not want to hear any more excuses on why it could be a long hard road.
To answer your question, quite frankly you have a good point why does Jones gets a BYE on such a killing from Oregon and Bama? All I can say is its more hope than anything, I give him a BYE because he cause gave me just a little faith to believe that Tennessee may return to my expectations over the next few years. Dooley well that stories over, we seen it through beginning to end, we saw what he could do with the program while he was there and to be honest when you have more close game opportunities to pull huge upsets (Dooley) and blow the game undermanned or not it hurts your reputation more than getting beat horribly by a #1 or #2 that outplays you 120% because UT didnt have a chance in any type of way. GBO
Therefore, as with any coach, CBJ's window will shrink little by little every year to come to reach being a contendor for the SEC championship. He doesnt necessarily get anymore BYES in my book since its not his first year, but all he has to do is show improvement. Do I lose faith in him if we killed by BAMA or Oklahoma no. But I dont expect to win a high number (Not all but hopefully) of the following games: Florida, Georgia, Mizzou, Vandy, Florida, Utah St., Arkansas St., Kentucky, Ole Miss, and Chattanooga, SCjr (give or take a few).
This could be a fresh start for UT? I am almost persuaded to treat it like CBJ's first year, alot of older players are gone, and hes got a great recruiting class, I long to see what another great 2 recruiting classes, and 2 years of exp. for this years recruits will do for the program. If he can recruit well for 2015 and 2016 and in 2016 we have anything close to losing record the boot will be kicking his tail out of Neyland.
