'15 JuCo DT David "DJ" Jones

Just talked to Jones about being his top school and he said it all goes back to the Vols staying with him through high school and into junior college.

He said he's built a strong relationship with Stripling and Jones and has become really close with them.

Alabama is second and he said his friendship with guys that were at East Mississippi last year, DJ Pettway and Jarron Reed is part of it as well as getting to know the staff more on a trip recently.

He will visit USC in two weeks he said and is looking forward to that trip.

His timetable is still late in the fall and he plans in taking all five official visits. He said he knows Auburn, Florida State and Tennessee will all receive official visits.

I don't mind others having an opinion. Just have to see how it plays out. I still think we take 2 DTs and 3 DEs. Landing McKenzie, Jones, Tuttle, Settle, while fun talking about it, was just never going to happen. Getting more than 2 top caliber DTs in a class is rare IMO. Kids have way too many options to all decide on the same place. Does not matter who the coaching staff is.
I seem to recall 'Bama signing 5 DTs a couple years ago, then reloading again the next year with like 3 more. It is rare to get more than 2 elite DTs which is why this haul could REALISTICALLY be so amazing. So far McKenzie is sold and DJ Jones has us as his leader. That's two elite DTs. Clemson is the new flavor of the month for Settle but I don't think that one is even close to over with. Coaches are recruiting Tuttle pretty hard, so I wouldn't be surprised if we moved up on his list.

Not sure why you don't think our coaching staff can pull it off. All the pieces are there. Just need a wizard to put the pieces in place . . .

I do not think we will land 4 elite DTs, but we need at least 3 DTs who will be in the regular rotation. I would like for us to go out and get 4.

I know this is difficult to do, but this has been such a weakness and we have missed on so many. I am really tired of us having to play DEs as undersized DTs.

With DJ being a juco, it makes sense to take at least 2 HS DT's. So three top DT's is where it is headed IMO. Taking three, frees a guy or two from last year's class that have the skillset to go to the O-line where help is still needed.

But I could also get greedy and take 4 quality DT's without blinking. lol.

Been saying it all along...we will get this kid, because the coaches didn't quit on him when they knew he wasn't going to make the grades. Instead, they grew their relationship and helped him get to a good JUCO school that would develop him. We have questioned why the staff sent him to a Mississippi JUCO, and I think this is why...they felt this would be where he would get coached the best. Vol on JUCO NSD IMO.

I feel like it could end up being McKenzie, Jones, and Quentez Johnson.

I hope so. It was a huge risk sending him there, but hopefully it works out for UT. IMO he is one of the few DTs out there who could be SEC ready day 1. Not sure I would continue to send kids we want back there, but we'll see.

Could end up that way if they can take another HS DT closer to NSD. I had felt for a while Howard was another HS DT as a late possibility if there was room. He committed to Maryland today, so he gone.

You just don't turn down 3 5* DT of they want to come. Get rid of a DB, WR, RB, TE, LB if you have to.

Could play out that way. Just have to decide where to make a cut IF they want to take more OL/DL. Maybe only 1 CB. Maybe only 1 RB and no TE. Maybe only Williams at WR.

I can see the 1 rb with no te if the freshmen perform really well. If Hurd and Scott can be solid with paulk redshirting, then we could afford to take only rocky easily. I've never seen butch go more than three deep in his rotation. The third guy will get less than 100 carries. If wolf and helm perform well, they could hold the te spot down for 4 years.

Cue the LV debate that we only have enough spots for 16 right now.

As much as I dislike hearing LV drive the issue into the ground, he's right. It's not really a debate. Right now, there is room for X number of signees (16 by LVs count). Hubbs is ASSUMING that we sign upwards of 22 or so, which means he believes 6 more kids will leave before classes begin in August of 2015. It doesn't make Hubbs' opinion any more right. LV is working in concrete numbers while Hubbs is operating with assumptive numbers. Hubbs is a little more tied in with the staff, so he has that liberty. LV doesn't.
