US Soldier Bowe Berghdahl freed from Taliban in prisoner exchange

True. The military sends out a letter each year about the value of your total benefits. I believe it was around 45k. So I can't claim the military didn't pay me well.

Where can I get one of these letters? I've never seen one in my 12 years

Lasted about 5 minutes at the most.

Right now the man is political plutonium except for those in safe Blue districts. I think the fact that the media turned on him like a rabid dog is what is telling as well. From the VA scandal to this in a short period, you generally don't mess with the veteran crowd. Political affiliation aside, this nation for the most part has finally realized you cannot treat the veterans like they were in the wake of Vietnam. And those that are returning now are held in high esteem.

But when you have a deserter that is held up as being "honorable" it tends to get folks riled up a tad and that's not including the current or former military crowd. So hopefully more are waking up that this Administration is entirely incompetent and remember those that have supported Obama through thick and thin until now. And vote the people out.

Yeah, I believe in unicorns as well lol

If he had been captured in a traditional sense by Taliban forces would you oppose the trade?

Maybe. But the fact that he voluntarily went over to the Taliban is what matters here. So while we can "what if" this situation all day long but the following conditions are not debatable:

Obama failed to notify Congress 30 days in advance as required by law.

We traded five high level Taliban officials for one deserter.

Susan Rice got on the talk shows about how he was honorable and distinct in his service. Which ultimately backfired in a huge manner.

Jay Carney decided to try to "explain" what she meant by saying something to the fact that serving in the military was honorable and distinctive. And more outcry as not everyone that puts on the uniform does so with honor.

This kid was preplanned as being made out to be a hero. Huge backfire when the details are coming out about the conditions of how it all went down.

Obama doesn't back down on the deal he made. And it's not really looking good for the home team.

Will you just admit for once they royally screwed the pooch on this one?

This wasn't about rescuing Bergdahl, this was about closing Gitmo. Bergdahl was just "convenient" cover, win-win.

The people who concocted this deal must be the same outfit that created the ACA web site.

If it were truly about closing gitmo, then I for one am happy.

Come on, you are not buying the "We leave no one behind" BS are you?

Once we were out of there in two years, they could have made this deal or probably a better one.

So tell me, what were the "exigent circumstances" again?

One day it's his health, 5 days later it's a death threat against his life. Nailing jello to a wall is easier than getting the truth from "the most transparent Administration in history."

They could have closed it a long time ago

It would only take about 30 seconds to execute all of them by firing squad

I find odd that people are outraged when terrorist groups behead our soldiers, yet many Americans seem to have similiar ideas.

No torture or public anything. Just simple death.

You make it sound like it's an armed forces vs terrorist situation. Those guys just want to kill any American. C'mon man.

So if a group of soldiers surrender, you believe the proper thing to do is kill them on the spot?

Terrorist group or a uniformed group? Also, I was unaware that all the guys detained at Gitmo had just come up and surrendered.

I have no problem killing those we have factual evidence to prove are terrorist leaders. Do you doubt they will return to sending others to carry out the actions they themselves are unwilling to do? How many terrorist leaders act as suicide bombers?

U.S. citizens or not, I believe the prisoners at Gitmo should receive due process, but if we can prove they're terrorists, I believe they should die. Releasing them is releasing people you know will turn around and try to kill you.

Agreed. Policy is we don't negotiate with terrorists. Argue back and forth the semantics of said policy as much as you want, but now we have openly shown we will negotiate with terrorists. Hunting season for Americans traveling abroad has been opened.

It's been open for a long time, it just got more rewarding.

Being uniformed is unimportant. If a terrorist were to surrender to a local police station, the appropriate response is not to kill him immediately

What? How is that "due process"? You believe if we can't prove anything, then we should kill them?

True

You interview him and try and get information on other terrorists

If they don't give up any info, you take him to trial immediately, with only one option for a guilty verdict and that's death

You know how squeamish liberals will get over the idea of eliminating them.

Two choices here. I'd say take them to the gates of Gitmo and shove them into the neutral zone. See if the Cubans want them.

Or drop them off in front of the Mossad Headquarters in Tel Aviv.

Simple really. They are off our hands and nobody can cause a fuss.
