Riley Ferguson appears to be gone

had a lot of upside, but we cannot get butthurt when he never took a snap in a game.

yall really wont mind when Torrance Gibson names us his leader in his top 7 here in a little bit on Twitter...

...and really wont mind when he commits to the VOLS and takes over the starting job as soon as he steps onto campus...

I would like to know if there are more posts of actual melt-downs or more posts ABOUT how everyone is going to meltdown. And, now, we have at least one post about people posting about melting down.

Dig back and find the topics when BJ left, or the Gruden saga. Those were pretty epic, or any during the 2008 season.

Ainge this morning.

Thanks for the info. I had heard there were a few incidents last year with Ferguson but no one ever said what they were other than 'attitude' and other non-revealing descriptions.

I can understand wanting to go to UF but if the coaches were going in alphabetical order and he threw a fit over it and either Josh told coaches 'look let him go first if he wants, I'll go on our next SEC road game' or RF went to coaches directly with it that's pretty bad. Don't throw a fit over alphabetical order and don't put your teammate in the position of giving up his turn so you can go first. It was a rotation and not that big of a deal.

Maybe it became so important to him because Jones said he might play a freshmen that game and if he wasn't there it wouldn't be him?

@AndrewTSR: Hearing that #Vol coaches expected a meeting with Riley Ferguson today. However, he has not shown up yet

This sort of thing makes me wonder: if as it appears he didn't put much effort into off-field football work, I wonder how much effort he put into his classes? He wouldn't be the first freshman to do a fade in spring semester.

Is this serious? Wow, know he is gone but he needed to at least Man-up and look someone in the eye and talk man to man.

Tied with Auburn on top of list.

Well if they had trouble getting him out of Charlotte every time he went home it makes a sense that now that he's gone that he'd no show.

Still, that's a lousy thing to do. Leaving is always hard even under better circumstances but he should've faced things.

Unfortunately it's not surprising in the least, given the kid's history this year.

If he doesn't even show for the meeting with th coaches who have taken out the time for him, then good riddance.

This is exactly how I viewed it when RF was getting reps with the 1's over Dobbs and everyone was hoping it was because he excelled. That was more of a case of CBJ giving RF a chance and clearly he couldn't do it.

:good!:

Anybody that signed up to play for Derek Dooley after his first two seasons at UT really wasnt a good QB. I dont care how many stars were by his name.

Ferguson wasnt picked to play for a better team. That was clue number 1. Clearly he came to Tennessee because he saw it as his best chance to start for an SEC program that was a dumpster fire. He never wanted to be here and when he realized how bad it was going to be for him, he bolted (or was told to pound sand).

I'm pretty sure CBJ didnt really want Ferguson on his team... ever, but as a first year coach just trying to survive and pick up the pieces of the Derek Dooley debacle, how could he refuse any player that had even the potential to play. Explains why CBJ ran as quick as he could to get Dobbs to flip his commitment at the last second. I think he knew how bad it was gonna be relying just on Worley and how Ferguson's attitude was.

Now, it's beyond me that CBJ was not more forward about this from the beginning. I dont think he "owed" me any answers as a fan, but at the same time he could have ended a lot of speculation about Ferguson a long long time ago. CBJ may be hard nosed with the players, but I think he's a bit of a sunshine pumper when it comes to his interactions with the media and public.

This whole handling of the QBs over the last year just reeks. And I mean that from all perspectives (the players, the coaches, the media). A little honesty could have made things much better, even if we didnt want to hear the truth.

I'm not sure I agree with the 1st part. The end of Dooley's 1st season and the start of his 2nd were the most exciting moments of the last 4 years for UT football. Bray was flinging it around to a slew of healthy receivers. It was fun to watch. Plus Chaney was a well-known OC.

When healthy, Dooley's O wasn't the problem.

Think we pretty much agree with the exception of 1 thing.... I don't think Butch "gave" Ferguson a chance. By all accounts Ferguson was earning his team 1 reps with his overall play throughout the Spring. I've heard he'd make 3 great plays and then 1 bonehead play... he could do more things than the others with his arm, but he was just too inconsistent to be named the starter.

This is a tweet from Swain that I heard him also say on his radio show:

Jayson Swain ‏@JaysonSwain 2h
Riley Ferguson wanted to be close home. I anticipate him going to Charlotte. He was a couple consistent practices away from being starter

To say that Butch "gave" Ferguson or any other player anything as it relates to earning a job belittles Jones as a coach IMO.

Apologies if I'm parsing your words too much or misunderstanding your point. That's just how I read it.

I don't think we want a coach that throws the players under the bus, nor do we want a coach that puts "family" business in the media. Whatever issues RF was having with the coaches and team, CBJ handled just as a family should....in-house.

I think RF was getting a shot because the other QBs just arent that good. RF could have been the starter even though CBJ really didnt like him, even though RF really didnt want to be at UT and even though we had a QB with much more experience. He would have been the starter only because his raw talent overcame all the other reasons not to name him a starter. I think CBJ would have wanted Dobbs to just be flat out better than the others. But that isnt happening, at least not yet.

He didnt have to give specific details about the situation. He could have just said that "it doesnt look real good for RF. It just isnt working out."

Most people I remember believed that CBJ just didnt want to burn his redshirt. But we now know that was not the real issue.

A lot of people had hope where no hope was ever present.

You are working much too hard to make this Dooley's fault.

Ferguson is a talented kid that would have been a 4* if not for his injury at the Elite 11. What if he does have a bit of an attitude? How many successful college players have had their attitudes or work ethic questioned at one point or another (ie. Manziel, Clowney).

It didn't work out for him with Jones. That happens. You have people who are capable followers and people who are capable leaders who just can't work together in every walk of life. I know that many have a need to blame someone.... in this case mostly Riley. It has to be some grave character flaw in him and by extension Dooley that caused the current heartache for so many.

Why can't we just accept that it didn't work out rather than trying to condemn the kid?
