Riley Ferguson appears to be gone

I suspect we will see Fergie back with the Vols soon. I truly believe (and hope) he and his family will examine the opportunity he'll be giving up and rethink this. There are sooooo many offensive weapons available to him, it would be utterly insane to walk away from UT at this point. I could understand if he was the low man on the totem pole, but he was splitting 1st team reps this spring.

I could be totally wrong, but this looks like a rash decision by a 19 year old. Hopefully cooler heads will prevail because Riley will regret this the rest of his life.

heard this as well. whats the deal here?

Some Rumor according to Reed on EA that he heard that Riley will be back in town to speak with Butch about his situation. Could just be trying to get a release. I thought Larry(LWSVOL) would know something since he has some of the best connections to the program on this board.

I hope he will come back only if he is willing to give the effort that is needed to be a UT QB under Butch. He does have the best arm according to those that know.

There was also talk on EA that the staff had some difficult times getting him back on campus for QB meetings after breaks.

If he reads this thread he'll turn and run.

Are you awake? Lucid?

You say the Dobbs-Ferguson battle wasn't to be decided until next year... BUT you conveniently forget to say that the BATTLE for the job was NOW, EVERY DAY, ALL DAY.

In that battle that was going on NOW, would you care to hazard a guess which QB was (i) in the lead, and (ii) pulling further and further ahead every time they stepped onto the field? Do you think that when all these present-day facts are considered, does it really matter when a "final" decision was going to be made? Or, do you think that a guy like Riley Ferguson could see the handwriting on the wall, and figure out that Dobbs was indeedthe Golden Child, just waiting to be anointed.

Now, see why it makes no difference that this QB decision was to be decided "next year"? If you're awake, and lucid, you will see the light.

Again: according to the guys who watch the practices, Dobbs didn't appear to be ahead on the field at all, much less that some kind of gap was irrevocably widening between them.

Now it does indeed seem possible, maybe even likely, that a gap between Dobbs and Ferguson was irrevocably widening off the field, thanks to intangible stuff like work ethic and attitude and leadership. And that Ferguson is either self-aware or lazy enough (pick one) to know that he is either temperamentally unsuited or unwilling to put in the effort (again, pick one) to bridge that gap.

If that's not a competition that Ferguson wants any part of, then having him leave the program isn't much of a loss.

I've only read the last few pages but I was expecting a major melt down. Anticlimactic IMO.

Peterman never puts himself above his teammates. He wants to play, but he is very close with Dobbs and Worley and has done a lot to help Joshua progress on the field.

Peterman may be a swell guy, but from the small smaple we've seen, he's not the answer at QB. He may as well have been trying to punt the ball to his receivers in that UF game, wouldn't be much difference.

Losing Ferguson hurts. We've got a serviceable, but very medicore guy in Worley, and a talented but completely unproven and untested guy in Dobbs, that's it. Ferguson was seen as having more upside than either, imo.

Two things:

I dont think this was a rash decision. I heard Rucker say this morning on College Sorts Nation that this had been going on ever since Ferguson came to UT.

Second, I think CBJ told him to pound sand if he didnt want to be here. I dont think he just up and decided to not stay.

Any chance to the Rumor of him maybe cooling down and coming back or has that shipped completely sailed?

What I heard from Rucker this morning is that it was CBJ that made the decision, not Riley.

I think Riley has been putzing around since he got to UT and CBJ just said that if you dont want to be here, dont come back.

Is he that emotionally unstable? He gets pissed, throws a fit and leaves a promising career behind, and generally shows his ass. Then, he turns around and cools off a few days later, says it was all a big mistake and begs for forgiveness?

If that happens, it seems like he needs to be laying on a couch somewhere instead of playing football.

Sounds like he couldn't deal with the competition--or didn't want to, or thought he was too good for competition.

As for it being "obvious" that it is Worley's job: Why would that be obvious? Worley has moxie but he's not all that talented. Dobbs is more talented and will be a very good QB for this program--mark it. We were going to lose one of the three underclassmen.

Unless something drastic happens in the practices leading up to the beginning of the season, you can just about count on the fact that Worley will be the starting QB.

I'm more worried about losing depth in 2015 than anything. None of this adds up IMO.

Butch Jones would not be the coach I think he is if he patted him on the back and said "It's ok Riley, we don't care about the perception this gives to the rest of the team. You're so swell and special!"

LOL... I don't think you have to Declare a redshirt before the season. He could be there every game ready to step in. But if Worley plays well... and there isn't a need for him, ie Worley is injured, you could always redshirt him. I may be wrong about declaring a redshirt, but to my knowledge it doesn't have to be stated before the year.

Didn't mean to come across like an ass, like I think I did upon re-reading. Apologies. But I just don't see Dobbs redshirting under any circumstance this year. Partly because we need him as either a reliable backup or the eventual starter. Secondly, for potential recruiting issues. I think RS freshman Ferguson leaving the program makes enticing a top ranked freshman QB (or 2) to join the '15 an easier proposition now.

RF is just as unproven. Everyone LOVES the back up QB until he plays.

That kind of coincides with what EA was saying this morning.

Never said he was the answer. I was commenting on how Riley was not on the same page as the rest of the QBs, who work together to improve.

But I thought RF was the best QB we had by a wide margin? I thought he had the best arm, was the most accurate, best runner and best decision maker? I mean the way many were talking RF was easily the next Peyton Manning and would easily win the starting job :)

In all seriousness, if he really wants to play somewhere else then I wish the kid good luck on his collegiate journey. I wonder if him leaving means that Worley and Dobbs have shown a lot of improvement?

I'm guessing Ferguson thought the same way :salute::salute::salute:
