Riley Ferguson appears to be gone

Who cares that he left!!! If Gibson chose to go elsewhere, then I'd be bummed. Did the kid ever play a down!!?? Again, who cares!!!

Anyone who understands that having multiple talented QBs in the program pushing for the starting job, increasing competition at the position, making the eventual starting QB that much better. That's who would care IMO.

That being said, the kid wasn't working like he should've been, perhaps felt some sort of entitlement to the position, didn't want to be here.... don't let the screen door hit ya on the arse.....

Did Butch let Riley down or did Riley let Butch down? Inquiring minds want to know?

I wouldn't have thought to ask this question but since you did, I'd say Riley hands down. CBJ held up his end of the bargain, which was give Riley a chance to compete for the job. Riley was splitting reps with the 1s prior to the Spring Game and played primarily vs the 1s in the O&W game so clearly Butch was giving him his opportunity to be the starter if he could earn it.

Appears Riley wasn't up for it and decided this wasn't for him. It hasn't been reported that CBJ ran him off but rather Riley has decided to leave the program. Looks like a no brainer to me.....Butch held up his end of the bargain and Riley didn't. No hard feelings, too bad it didn't work out, both parties move on.

But Riley has to look out for himself. He did all he could to show he loved the Vols. Snubbed Saban, walked on, and competed well. He deserved more than what he got.

Huh?!? What did he do to deserve more? He deserved the opportunity to compete for the starting QB position. He got that. He deserved no more than that opporunity.

All this talk of hoping Worley & Dobbs better be ready is bull. Most of you guys put all your faith is a 3* QB that has never taken a snap as a college QB...apparently Fergy wasn't ready to compete or lead this team this year or beyond or he would have stayed. He wanted the QB job handed to him and when it wasn't he quit...we don't need players like that especially at the QB position...good riddance!

Well said. The guy was a mythical savior to some on this board for no other reason than he was an unknown. They need to get over it. RF was obviously not up for competition so that tells me all I need to know. The other 3 are set to battle it out and hopefully we see some improvement in the QB play in Year 2.

But no really, my reasoning was that I thought Riley thinks he is ready to start and that if the coaches didn't think so, he would transfer out to TTU or somewhere like that. I don't think the kid wants to sit any longer, especially if Dobbs is the #2 this year. If in fact Dobbs is the #2, this is best for Ferg if he wants to get somewhere early enough in his career to make an impact. Just my opinion.

Riley Ferguson Leaving Tennessee Program - Rocky Top Talk

Cant believe this really happened. Why would a kid not want to compete. According to lots of ppl on here, he was the #2 guy based on his reps in the spring.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! It does feel good to be right, however. I've been saying it was a Dobbs/Worley race for a while with Worley in front, looks like Fergy saw the writing on the walls and didnt want to put in the work to move up the depth chart.

Rumor from TOS that he's no longer with the team. At this point it's just a rumor, but hopefully someone in the know can strike the rumor down completely.

I have high hopes for Ferg

He is a good player, in my opinion. Of course, we never actually saw him in a live game.

The good thing is that E.T.S.U. needs a q.b.

If not for the injuries to him Worley and Peterman last year, he probably would have left last year. Probably thought he could recover and win the job.

Surprised one of the four QBs hadn't left before now!

Thinking back, I can't remember seeing Fergy doing much of anything, so I am not to worried about losing him, JMO!

Too many posters are concentrating on the back story here...was it this, was it that.

The bottom line, and I mean bottom line is that IF Riley had been #2, he would have stayed. There is nothing else here to concentrate on, to speculate about, etc., other than he knew that he was beaten out by Dobbs. If he had beaten out Dobbs, he'd still be here.

If you've played, you know that feeling that you get when the coach has made his decision, and it's not you. It's the other guy. Riley felt that feeling, didn't think he could change Butch's mind, and decided he'd be better off at another school.

It's just that simple.

Could be. Perhaps after reviewing the whole of spring to include S&C, spring practice, and outside commitment to improvement, Jones told RF he wasn't doing enough to stay #2. Or it could be that Jones simply wouldn't make RF guarantees to allay his insecurities. Maybe he was #2 and wanted assurances that would make him #1 after Worley was done. Jones said "no, you still have to beat out Dobbs, Peterman, and whoever else we sign".

In either event, you are right about the feeling produced by a coach's or boss' decision. So RF had to think about his own future and appears to have made a choice. The Vols will be fine and likely won't miss him. RF will have a new opportunity.
