Riley Ferguson appears to be gone

Too many posters are concentrating on the back story here...was it this, was it that.

The bottom line, and I mean bottom line is that IF Riley had been #2, he would have stayed. There is nothing else here to concentrate on, to speculate about, etc., other than he knew that he was beaten out by Dobbs. If he had beaten out Dobbs, he'd still be here.

If you've played, you know that feeling that you get when the coach has made his decision, and it's not you. It's the other guy. Riley felt that feeling, didn't think he could change Butch's mind, and decided he'd be better off at another school.

It's just that simple.

Without knowing the details, this makes too much sense.

I am sure this has been said, but I feel like we have a huge "silver lining" here:

-Thins the depth chart = more attractive to QB prospects.

-Opens another scholarship = makes our 2015 class larger and could help us sign another QB in this class behind whoever the elite guy is that we get (I hope it is Gibson and Francois to add to Jennings).

-Signing these guys will only raise the talent level at the University of Tennessee. I respect Justin Worley for his hard work and effort. I find him to be serviceable. Joshua Dobbs did good work in the playing time he had this season, but was obviously raw. Nathan Peterman deserves a clean slate in my opinion. He had bad nerves which is understandable and then got hurt. I will not speculate on Riley Ferguson's talent level because the fact is, we never saw the boy play.

All things considered, any QB they bring in this class will be an upgrade to our current stable. I don't need to see huge yardage gains after first contact, big designed run plays that break off big yardage, or a lot of deep ball passes that make our QBs looking flashy. I just want efficiency: No turnovers, no wasted opportunities, good completion percentage. This is possibly the best thing that could have happened, IMO.

I can tell u only have 30 posts. Too much sensibility and thought put into this post.

I wonder if he'll transfer to another FBS school, or if he will go FCS? Looking at schools close to his hometown near Charlotte, there isn't much available. If it's true that he wanted to be closer to home, well he won't get much closer. UNC Charlotte recently started up a football team...they are currently FCS but moving to FBS. I'm just curious to see where this guy lands next.

ETSU might "make room" for him

Brandon Stewart did the same in the spring of '95

Ferguson is leaving because he is afraid of competing with Peyton Manning?

Sure, I was/am a Riley fan.
The only difference between myself and most others around here is the fact that I am a fan of all players that are on the team.

I thought the difference was when your mouth gets plugged with your foot you still find the room to mumble enough and try to change the subject.

The Dobbs-Ferguson competition wasn't going to be decided until next year, when Worley will be out of the way and one or the other would take over as starter. That still had a year to play out. Running away now because you're upset about being behind is a bad look. There's never been the whisper of a rumor that Jones likes Dobbs enough that this contest was already over.

Best of luck to Riley - wherever he ends up. Hopefully he can help us in the future the same way Stewart did (beat K State in BIG 12 CG) to create a "win and you're in" scenario for '98 Vols

Yep- Manning had a lot to do with that.

This is good news.

Ferg was going to be a RS Freshman with plenty of playing time ahead of him. This is an obvious sign that Dobbs is well ahead of him in development. This is good news for our program because it means we have a QB for the future.

This is of course assuming the transfer is because of depth chart/playing time

Did Dobbs truly beat him out, or is it a case of Dobbs is Jones' recruit and Ferguson wasn't?

I have a hard time believing that anyone would transfer because of depth chart/playing time issues with the possibility of 3 years (all coming after Worley graduates) as a starter ahead of them if they weren't sure that they were beat.

So if it isn't because he was beat solidly by Dobbs then he is transferring for reasons totally unrelated to those that we don't yet know about.
