The Los Angeles Times reports that the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has admitted to mistakenly shooting and killing 30 year-old John Winkler, an aspiring television producer. Winkler, 30, was shot after he rushed out of an apartment. Three deputies thought he was a stabbing suspect who had held people hostage and fired.

Deputies Kill Aspiring TV Producer By Mistake

Whoops sorry!..The officers went home safely at the end of their shifts, that’s the important thing.

Why is this not murder?

They admitted it was a mistake, good grief what else do you want? Justice? Equal protection under the law?

Get real!

well cause they are all 'heros' to media drones

If you shot someone as an "oops" it's entirely possible, in fact almost a certainty, that you wouldn't be facing a "murder" charge as you suggest.

Now, if you want to say there's damn skippy some culpability involved and "oops" just isn't good enough...you've got a pretty good argument.

I would imagine that the prosecutor there is charged with the duty to determine if criminal charges are warranted. I don't think you can get that from an article like this, though.

Kudos to the Sheriff's Office for sorting out what happened and admitting the mistake.

If it was an unintended result what else would you call it?

The issue shouldn't be the intent. (Unless you think the man was shot on purpose even though the knew he was innocent of wrongdoing) No, the issue is what are they going to do about what happened? If you run over someone in your car by accident it's a "mistake" right? You didn't "murder" anyone but you DID kill them.

There's culpability here...they've admitted it...now we see what comes of it.

no need to fear police when guys like this are leading them

Sheriff Ed Brown considers himself to be the owner of every human being residing in North Carolina’s Onslow County – but he counsels his subjects not to worry, for his is a benevolent dictatorship administered by quasi-divine people endowed with transcendent wisdom.

“The vast majority of our Duties and Functions are performed with only our conscience Watching and Directing us,” Brown explained in a full-page advertisement for his re-election campaign. “Those in the law enforcement profession have complete power over you, your life, your family, your loved ones, your rights, your freedom, your future and everything precious to life. From the very word of a Law Enforcement Office [sic], all those Precious Things of Life hang.”

^^In one sense he is correct, they do (think) they have complete power over us.

SIAP

When those test results did come in, they were negative, meaning Weyker was neither drunk nor under the influence of other drugs. When the district attorney’s office decided not to file charges against her, Weyker said she wasn’t informed.
About 10 months after the accident occurred, investigators decided to interview Quiles regarding the accident. Just two days after the crash, surveillance video that showed Quiles was responsible was made available to the sheriff’s office, but law enforcement had decided to continue pressing Weyker to pay for the damages caused in the accident.

I'm not a cop obviously and am not familiar with the particular town/force in question, but I would think having to shoot at someone twice in two years would be a bit out of the ordinary. I'm sure it happens from time to time, but I would imagine it is by far the exception. And a 93 year old?

It's a shame for the victims, and it's a shame that bad cops come to represent police forces in the minds of so many Americans because of incidents like these.

Most cops go whole 25 plus year career without shooting someone let alone two! And over 4 months of that time he was on paid administrative leave awaiting a decision on his first shooting.

I don't know if you've noticed, but more and more cops are declaring ANYTHING that frightens them an "immediate" threat and simply blowing people away.

Why should he have been fired after the first officer involved shooting?

when a cops kills someone they should be fired or put behind a desk taken off the streets etc, good or bad shooting don't matter.. because if its a good shooting a cop is never the same after that anyway!

in ether case he wont have the chance to kill again!

Good thing we have the Russian Times to provide some hard hitting journalism about American issues. Not kidding.

I see. So I assume you feel the same about regular citizens?

If a man with a CCW shoots and kills an intruder, good or bad, he should not be allowed to carry a firearm anymore. He won't have the chance to kill again!!!!!!!

I never said the cop couldn't carry a gun anymore..just not on my dime!

I don't pay the regular citizen to carry a gun! Like I do the cop.

That is the stupidest comment I think I've ever read from you and you usually have some pretty asinine comments.:banghead2:

VM: "We know you have this gun and you might have to use it one day, but if you do use it, know we are either going to fire you or sit you behind a desk for the rest of your life because that gun is actually just supposed to look pretty."

I know a couple cops that have had to use their guns in self defense. Its not something MOST take lightly, but its not something they should be punished for.
