How many UT QBs have beaten Bama and UF a combined 5 or more times?

I didn't know that our QB's played them alone, maybe that is why we have had such a bad record against those teams recently.

Don't know if some of y'all know this, but Football is a team sport. A great team will still be great even with an average QB. An awful team will be awful even if they have a great QB, unless that QB is a once in a generation, transcendent type of player. QB's are the face of the game, but we put wayyyy too much emphasis on them and too little on the teams that surround them.

According to Cutts opinion on Manziel, he would of worked with him. Manziel played playground ball like Bray.

The problem wasn't Brays style of play. It was his piss poor attitude, and terrible leadership. Peyton was extremely reckless with the ball at times but he made up for it by working hard and being coachable

See the thing is you know neither of those things for certain. What kind of time are you talking about? A redshirt year? What's wrong with that? Almost any school TG chooses he is likely to RS.

So what would be wrong with signing TG, red shirting him, get him some help with his throwing mechanics and let him compete for the starting job? I will agree that his mechanics need some work but the kid can throw. He can throw the deep ball pretty good. Do you not realize how good of a QB he could be? This kid has an almost unlimited ceiling as a QB. That's why these teams are recruiting him.

Do you have any proof that ANY school is recruiting him at WR?

This is exactly what you do with this type of QB. He has UNLIMITED potential to be a great QB. He would thrive in our offense.

Like Johnny?

Haha wow, cause I obviously meant he alone won, and I never said his teams weren't better or that football wasn't a team sport(thanks so much for pointing that out for me, never would've known)

As you said, QBs are the face of the team, so I wondered what QBs had winning records against two of our biggest rivals.

Which 4 year span has the best record against our rivals? That better?

I'll admit I bandwagoned on the vols in 98. Then I focused on playing sports and such, that I stopped watching college ball. When I started watching again, I went back to the orange.
I'm no fair weather fan. Loyalty is too important to me.
I was one of those kids that was a football geek though. I'm more of a line guy if you noticed. Without the trenches, it all crumbles.

I'll compromise this then. TG won't be an instant impact starter. He's got a lot to learn. More than the other guys were after. I think Butch can turn TG into a star if he properly develops. He needs to be able to think quickly in progressions. He will get creamed if he runs as much as he does in HS

So you bandwagoned at the age of five? But can't remember who we had coaching when Clausen was here. Sounds legit.

What the hell does that have to do with this year?

And FTR, three of the starting QBs were from the west coast

And the other 3 were from AL, NC, and TX

Four....Clausen, Clausen, Ainge and Bray. Apology accepted. You make it sound like we cant pull a West Coast QB in spite of having done it on a regular basis.

I'll admit I was only 11 when clausen played. My dad rarely ever had the vols on, and I didn't really watch college ball back then.

I started seriously following the vols when Kiffin came here. Which was when I was about done with high school. I've been learning about our history also. I'm in no way an expert on vol history.

So you've only been following us since we've sucked and think you have an eye for talent and can rate who the best Vol QBs have been. Oh Lord.

Post wasn't towards you alone, your post was just a good example. It irks me no matter the level that a QB's "greatness" is determined more by the team they are on then by themselves. Just look at the NFL where most pundits say that a QB is judged by his rings. It seems to me that whenever comparing QB's most compare the team instead of the QB's individual stats and moments of greatness.

I will now step off my soapbox because I have made my opinion as clear as it's going to be.

we've all given credit to cutt for clausen.

All credit should be given to Cutt, all his former QB's have given him credit including Eli and Peyton. He is the QB master. Who can make a NFL QB at Duke?

Since we are comparing TG to every vol QB, you have to compare the talent around the QB, the defense, and how hard the league was when they played. Even if TG comes, you can't compare W-L records vs Manning bc the defense and overall talent on those teams are arguably the best in TN history.

Of course, some would argue if he beat Fla, then he is Manningesque when everyone beats Fla now, nobody hardly did in the 90s.

Given the fact that we didn’t play Florida regularly prior to divisional alignment in 1990, few UT quarterbacks from the era prior to that year had the opportunity to play a combined total of five or more games against Florida and Alabama. Before attempting to answer your question, let me point out that Casey has the second best career winning percentage (.773) of any UT quarterback and his road record of 14-1 is better even than Peyton’s (13-3). The closest contenders to Casey’s combined five victories over Florida and Alabama would include the following:

Bobby Scott (1969-1970): 3-1. Bobby probably had the most impressive and most enjoyable season vs. our two preeminent rivals in 1970. We beat Florida 38-7 and Alabama 24-0; Scott established a then-school record vs. Florida of 385 yards passing. He also had the pleasure of defeating Alabama 41-14 in 1969, a game in which we led 34-0 before pulling all starters.

Johnny Majors (1954-1956): 3-2. Technically, Johnny was, of course, a triple-threat tailback, but, within Neyland’s single-wing offense, he led the team in passing all three years. Johnny had the pleasure of playing some of Alabama’s worst teams and shutting them out decisively, 20-0 in 1955 and 24-0 in ’56.

Tee Martin (1998-1999): 3-1. His only loss within the two series was UF’s 23-21 defeat in 1999.

Bobby Dodd (1928-1930): 4-1. The only quarterback in Tennessee’s history other than Peyton Manning to achieve All-American status, Dodd was part of the Gene McEver-led ’28 team that put Tennessee on the proverbial map by beating the mighty Tidy Bowl boys 15-13. With the possible exception of whomever may have been Tennessee’s quarterback in 1932-33, Bobby might be the only other UT quarterback to lead the Big Orange to two victories against the Lizard Nation in his career. Incidentally, Tennessee was 27-1-2 in games that Dodd started (Bobby Dodd - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia).

Cool historical stats. I'll have to tell Bobby he made a cameo appearance on Volnation. I knew he slapped around Bama, didn't know he had punt kicked Florida during his playing days at UT.

This thread has turned really weird.

Intelligent conversation about Gibson --> Gibson is a thug --> Gibson has an ego --> 50 pages of Zach Gentry --> --TYLER BRAY IS THE BEST QUARTERBACK IN THE WORLD --> this is how old I was when I became a Vol fan --> ???

Well I guess I can help turn the thread back even though I'm usually an enabler for off topicness.

I think TG has a chance to be special, but there is also a chance for him to be a huge let down. He is a high ceiling, low floor type of guy. I would be lying if I didn't say that I was extremely worried with how he was moved to WR at that one camp because of how poor a QB performance he had.

The being moved thing is what has me worried. A good comparison would be James Banks.
