Unofficial Coaching Search Thread

Cronin's first roster had only 1 contributor from the previous year. It was a completely different team. He essentially started from scratch.

But Mack inherited a pretty good situation following Sean Miller

Right but it wasn't as if Cronin inherited a horrible program that he had to completely rebuild, they had been pretty successful the previous 3 years.

Easy to spend other peoples money isn't it

happens all the time - only they are called politicians that spend it --- point is if they want a decent coach and the money isnt there and they (big shot boosters) have tons of it they should help the cause, it pays off with winning.

We have never been a basketball school. We had a good run but the VAST majority of the fan base is and always will be football first. We were good and basketball but don't confuse that with is being a basketball school

I think people that say this must not realize that we have some of the nicest basketball facilities and one of the best fanbases in the entire country. Yes, UT will always be football first. That doesn't mean that basketball can't be our 1B - we have the money and tradition to do it. Bruce Pearl proved this, and the Martin era solidified it. Even with three mediocre seasons (except for the amazing tourney run this year, of course) butts were in the seats and the fans were engaged.

Ohio State and Florida are both primarily football schools that produce consistent winners in basketball. Tennessee is one of the few other schools in the country that can pull this off. That's why it's so important to make a good hire here.

I'd have White and Tyndall above Pitino. I'd actually have Tyndall above Archie Miller too. But to me, Pitino isn't in the top 150 yet. More like a sophomore who might be a high riser next year but we just don't quite know yet.

Pitino is only in the conversation because of his last name. If I recall correctly, we recently had a coach like that who didn't work out so well.

Thanks for sharing the info. You would think Butch would have nothing but good things to say to friends he has at his previous employer. It would be very hard to compare cincy and UT in terms of facilities and what the coaches have access to. Only thing has me questioning Hart making a play for Cronin would be the money. I think I saw where he made 1.55 or so in 2013. The offer would have to be north of 2 million per to get him thinking. If Hart is going north of 2 mil, IMO Marshall and Smart have to be in play. If I'm an AD and I am shopping coaches in the 1.8-2.3 area, I'll find a booster willing to chip in the extra 500-700 grand and I will go get the homerun(at least in the fans eyes) in Marshall. JMO

If the facilities situation is as bad as the OP says, Cronin would probably leave for a face-saving amount above his current salary.

I guess as long as we don't have to invoke the Patriot Act to find out information on the new coach I will consider it a win.

One MAJOR difference.Pitino Jr has a winning record, Dooley did not

Pitino has a very very high likelihood of being a far better coach than Doolander, but having a winning record in football is much tougher than basketball. Especially at small schools where a full 1/3rd of your games are going to be against schools that pound you. Football has much less parity than basketball.

He has a very short track record and a losing in-conference mark this season, but point taken.

Pitino is not my first choice of the rising stars but he would be a much better hire than Dooley. I have White as number one on the list of rising stars.

Admittedly I don't follow college basketball too far out side the SEC, but I don't understand the love for Chris Mack. I saw us lose to his team narrowly at Xavier and then handily beat them in the Bahamas. I don't remember him standing out to me as a guy that was a top tier coach.

At any rate, I'm willing to listen to and read the comments of support he has received from several of you on VN. If he's the best guy for our job and gets hired, I'm all in.

That narrow win over UT was without 2 of his best players iirc. However, I cant defend his loss to UT.

Yes, and Mack hasn't been nearly so good after Miller's guys graduated. He's lost no less than 13 each of the last 3 years. Post season goes sweet 16, no ncaat, out in first round for those same three years. Not a deal-breaker, but it does make me uncomfortable.

He's safe in the respect that he will consistently win. But I wonder about his ceiling.

Question about Archie Miller. How can a coach that has a team talented enough to beat Ohio St., Syracuse, and Stanford, lose in the regular season to teams like Southern Cal, Illinois St, Richmond, Rhode Island, St. Joes (twice), and barely sneak into the NCAA tournament (avoiding the play in game U.T. got because the game was in Dayton).

I mean, seems like he underachieved and then got hot in the NCAA tournament.

I never said Tyndall can't coach. His resume should have him way down the list. Some of you are acting like he made a Final Four. To me he is average. His O is boring and I don't think he would recruit well. He would not be the worst hire. He is not in the top ten best available or realistic though.

I would much rather have White, Cluess or several other coaches.

If we were acting like he made the Final Four then we would be saying he should get 2.5 to 3 million. Stop with the hyperbole and just admit you are throwing around the little actual basketball knowledge you have.

And that's the devils advocate side to him being "a hot name". Was that run a complete fluke and they just caught a few teams who were struggling in the NCAAT?

Like most things it's probably not as good or as bad as it seems, he likely isn't at that elite level yet, but he's probably an up and coming coach who will be a consistent winner.
