Unofficial Coaching Search Thread

I'd be satisfied with White or Tyndall, would live with Pitino and hope for the best.

Howland is apparently too hot to touch.

Still, if that info comes from Rucker, not sure how much faith I have in it.

247 update says Tyndall, White and Pitino are most likely candidates.

Cronin and Mack are using Hart to lobby for a raise.

Recruits say they would love to play for Howland who is pushing Hart very strongly for the job.

All per 247

If Howland actually has highly sought after recruits saying they would play at Tennessee if he were hired, that would shake things up a bit IMO. Of course Hart could hire him and there is not a peep from any kid rated over a 3*. The resume is there, but something seems off with his consideration for openings.

Really think White would be a great fit.
Crowd pleasing offensive style and runs a clean program.
More I read about him, the better I like.
Also, think the kids would like him and talent onboard could play his offense.

But wait...he is an Ole Miss guy. If he were teamed with Hart, who is a Bammer, and Cheek, who is a Gator, we will be doomed.

If I'm Hart, I would give Howland an interview.

Pretty amazing that an athletic department with a $100 million budget can only afford to spend $2 million on a basketball coach.

The thing is if you pay the extra money to get a great coach, it would more than pay for itself. This is common sense. How do people that think like that get in charge of decision making.

ive said before the hire will be from left field.. bto was the biggest ccm homer n now he is acting like he has some type of inside info based on him speculating..

its pure speculation from anyone posting on this site..

im not picking on bto so dont try n ban me..lol

i will say this if hart goes cheap u know he doesnt care about winning championships. maybe thats the reason bama let him go because they wanted saban n he was like no lets keep shula n give him more time..

this is harts chance to prove he wants to win big n not just go to a bowl game n ncaa tourney. he went cheap n football n now maybe bb.. wtf but lets keep donating n supporting him because thats what good sheep do...

Apparently Dave Hart was at the zoo this week since Cuonzo leaving. With football coach searches we look for coaches getting on planes. With basketball coaches we are looking for candidates meeting Hart in the gorilla cage.

I should have known better to ask!

Probably Mack, but I do think White could be a good recruiter
From White's blurb on the ole miss site:

A key figure in the recruiting arena, White has helped Ole Miss haul in some of the best signing classes in program history during his tenure. The incoming class in his first season back was ranked as high as third in college basketball by recruiting publications, while two recent classes have both been rated top 25 in the country.

So far it's been reported Howland lobbied for Marquette, Wake, Cal, and Tennessee at minimum. There's some underlying reason he's not getting any interest. I imagine the first call AD's make is to UCLA's AD to see what's up with him.

Tossing out a bunch of money doesn't guarantee wins (See Arkansas/Mike Anderson Bama-Grant) not does "going cheap" mean you don't want to win or won't challenge for championships (see Tennessee/Pearl, Florida/Donovan) it's a matter of a guy who can coach and recruit.

Donovan wasn't expected to be this human dynamo when he arrived at Florida. He was a guy who went 35-20 at Marshall, but was known to be a good assistant and a good recruiter. Turned out he was an amazing recruiter and he loaded Florida up very fast.

Nice rundown, thanks. I would be happy with any of those 6. However, if it's true that Shaka, Marshall, or Crean could have been hired for 2.5, heads should roll. Are there not people at UT gifted with math skills and common sense to know that Shaka Smart would pay for himself?

TN will never be a basketball school. The commitment simply hasn't and isn't there from the administration.

That is the reason I have never purchased BB tickets. It is a secondary sport at UT, with the exception of the Pearl years.

Probably because of that scandal with the Shabazz incident and him losing control of his players. Some schools don't like to hire coaches who has baggage but a lot of them take the risk too.

Remove Wade from the list. Enough talk about him. His name doesn't need to be out there. Thanks.

Thanks for the info.

I think if we were to get Pitino or Miller, they'd both be looking for their next job as soon as they could. They're upwardly mobile. I don't see them staying at UT very long (if they're successful). I think the other four out of that last list would stay here much longer.

If we don't pay north of $2 million to get Marshall or Smart, then our program is doomed for failure. Is there really a big difference between $1.5 mil and $2.0 mil over 4 years if you hire the coach you truly want?

Could be as simple as AD asks what Howland is looking for in terms of salary. When they hear the negotiation starts at 2.75 million, they just hang up.

We were a basketball school a few years ago.

We have the facilities of a basketball school.

We have never been a basketball school. We had a good run but the VAST majority of the fan base is and always will be football first. We were good and basketball but don't confuse that with is being a basketball school
