In recruiting, we are enamored with stars. Here's my take on our 6 realistic candidates and where I'd place them in a Top 200 "recruiting" board. For the record, scouting services are all opinions with only the top 25 or so recruits being more of a sure thing. I'd say the same goes with coaches. This is just a fun way to rate them.
Mick Cronin- 4* coach in the 40-50 range; solid recruiter who has had good tournament success. He's established. Easily the steadiest on the list as he's shown success over a long period. Only one Sweet 16 appearance. Battle in a once tough Big East. You know exactly what you get.
Chris Mack- 4* top 60 guy with a rising stock; he's had some steady success and can recruit fairly well. His teams compete. Great tourney runs with former coaches players, but is establishing himself very well. He's got a 5* ceiling. You know exactly what you get.
Archie Miller- 3* right outside the Top 100; young guy that is akin to having a guy "blowing up on the summer circuit;" stock is rising quickly, but is unknown if he can sustain success with a short track record. He can also recruit. Lower risk, but high reward.
Richard Pitino, Jr- 3* outside the Top 100; no tournament appearances; has had strong teams, but it's unknown if can really recruit consistently; he's like the player who shows potential but transfers to different schools for PT; he only gets his high ranking for his bloodline; not proven; high risk, high reward
Donnie Tyndall- 3* in the 125 range. He's had success in small schools and had solid seasons recently. Limited tourney success and decent recruiter for the level he's at. He's my vanilla "safe" option due to having mild success and potential to grow.
Michael White- 3* Top 150 and rising; new kid out of nowhere is showing potential against his level of competition; no tourney appearances; could end up being a Russell Westbrook 3* who pans out to play like a 5*; high risk, high reward.
Of course, guys like Shaka and Marshall are the 5* guys everyone is clamoring over and wants.
It is no accident that 3 of the most winning coaches in Tennessee basketball lore had very winning ways before they arrived. J Greene had won over 70 % of his games before arriving. Pearl and Mears had both won over 80%. That is why I find it unacceptable behavior on Hart's part to bargain shop for a coach that is likely doomed for failure. If he does not have the money to get Marshall or Smart ( or if they will not come ), then I think a more proven coach at a smaller school that has won 70 to 80 % of their games is what we should be looking for. If the name is from left field and he has won around 85% of his games ( as both Mears and Pearl did) then I am willing to try that coach.

Donnie Tyndall from their point of view, posted 5 hours ago. Tyndall's buyout is apparently 700k.
Instant Analysis: Tyndall's future at USM
I'd have White and Tyndall above Pitino. I'd actually have Tyndall above Archie Miller too. But to me, Pitino isn't in the top 150 yet. More like a sophomore who might be a high riser next year but we just don't quite know yet.
Your percentages are a bit high, especially on Jerry Green, he was probably closer to 55-60 percent, I know he was 72-70 at Oregon.
But I do like guys with 5+ years of high level winning. Guys who can bring a program out of hard times too.
We've spent 36 million dollars on a practice facility and an arena renovation in the last 7 years. We were paying Coach Pearl a top 20 in the nation salary 4 years ago.
I don't understand why people continually throw this out there when it's untrue.
In other words, size does matter. In all seriousness, UT BB does have a large following. We may not be known as a BB giant but TBA is consistently packed. If TBA held, oh lets say 25,000, my guess is that UT would still pack the place.
Those big shot boosters were partly the blame for Martin leaving - those jerks should pony up the money for a guy like Marshall - You kept saying money is an issue - it should not be with these rich boosters and their planes etc. BTW Pastner wasnt on your list ?
