Jeff Goodman tweets UT has Pitinio Jr. on the short list

Never said that. But he was in demand. Cal hired him, and Marquette interviewed him. Other than a remote possibility at Shaka Smart, what has Tyndall and White done?

So, how is it not true?

I have demand for Cuonzo too. I'd love for someone to cleanup my dogs crap in the backyard. Nobody but me will do it for free - unbelievable!

Why are we acting like Smart, Tyndall, White, Howland, and Marshall are our only options?!?

It's day one.

When has Day one speculation at UT ever produced the coach of the future?

If Hart's truly making a run at Smart it gives me some confidence he's at least aiming high. We may end up with another up and comer but it appears he's reaching out to some bigger names.

Kind of like Hart did when trying to land Charlie Strong for football. IMO he would have overpaid for him at 4 million+. IMO we ended up with the better deal with Butch at closer to 3 million.

Only coaches IMO worth 2 mil+ of those being mentioned are Marshall and Smart. IMO it takes closer to 3 to get either one. In the end I hope Hart ends up hiring White and saves about 1.5-2 million a year.

I may be biased since I'm a MN fan, but there seems like absolutely no way Pitino leaves the Gophers. He loves coaching here, did an outstanding job his first year, and returns almost everyone for next year. Plus, Tennessee is on the same level, or slightly higher than MN as far as an attractive coaching job, so it wouldn't me much of a step up. According to Twitter, Pitino has already said no, just not publicly yet.

I don't know that the next Tennessee coach's name has even come up yet, especially if it is going to be an up and coming guy, which I think is a good idea. They'll land someone good though, just don't be shocked if he isn't the big name a lot of you want.

Dooley is a bigger name than Pitino in these parts.

Pretty sure we don't want either.

I was freaking out at the prospect of Charlie Strong two years ago. I'm not completely bought in to Smart either for some reason.

Thanks for your Minnesota insight! As a dedicated Vol fan, whose blood is orange, let me say in the kindest way, welcome to Volnation! Now go along and dig some more gopher holes and put your head in where the sun doesn't shine! Just kidding, I think!

Nice answer. The truth is he was in demand for decent jobs. The longer this goes, the further down the list we go. In no way am I saying that the new coach will be worse than Martin. The new coach will simply not be in as much demand as Martin was after the S16 run. Simple concept.

It excites me that maybe he is willing to open the check book, but I've had reservations about Smart for awhile. Anthony Grant did well at VCU but flamed out at Bama, I know Smarts been better but still.

What scares me is you'd likely have to sign Smart to about a $2.5m/6 year deal and that basically means if things go south too bad, you're tied up with him for awhile.

I think Smart would recruit better than Martin.

Edit: Sorry I meant Grant. Lol

He also probably won't lose 5 games after calling timeouts tied or close after big baskets late that lead to the other team regrouping, zapping the crowd and momentum, and resulting in being outscored 2-1 the rest of the way.
Can't wait not to see that crap anymore.

There's a lot of candidates that will coach better in games no doubt. I'm glad the bald spot on the side of my head will have a chance to grow back. Hopefully, I won't be scratching it after critical game decisions.

I agree 100%

...we're still counting hours since CCM left, not days, weeks, or months. I believe it was weeks/months before we settled on Butch, he's been pretty great so far.

We'll be fine.

There you go.

Pretty sure Butch Jones wasn't being chatted about on day 1.

Those names were Gruden (RIP Grude Threads), Strong, Peterson, etc

I mentioned Butch Jones very early in the process. Always liked the idea of Butch over Strong while saving the $$.
