Jeff Goodman tweets UT has Pitinio Jr. on the short list

Oh yeah, Martin was in serious demand.

He went to Cal.

If you think Cal is a better Bball program then Tenn, you need to head over to the football board.

Never said that. But he was in demand. Cal hired him, and Marquette interviewed him. Other than a remote possibility at Shaka Smart, what has Tyndall and White done?

So, how is it not true?

Unsolicited, I have heard this from two unrelated people in ATL today - both are not vol fans. I thought they were crazy and, at the time, wondered if they both read the same article somewhere... maybe there's some smoke out there.

Let's be honest. The difference between paying 1.5m and 2.0m is pretty small when you are the UTAD.

After looking at Smart's deal at VCU, I doubt he even considers Tennessee for less than 2.3-2.5 PLUS major bumps in pay for his staff. His VCU deal goes through 2023. I would imagine UCLA offered him more than 2 mil a year and he said no to them.

I'm now hearing a push for Smart, small chance but we're trying. Mike White too.

I've heard Smart's name thrown around, and that this may be a fit he likes, but not getting hopes up at all. With that said, I love White and think that would be just fine considering how cheap he would be.

With the length we would be able to put on the floor (Thompson,Hubbs, Richardson and Davis) Smart would be dangerous as would the UT press.

I agree, we must have seen the same thing...

A majority of what Smart asked VCU for was improvements for his staff and program. That includes more salary for his staff and a bevy of things like better meals for players, improved travel for the program and other perks for his staff

People don't seem to get that it's not one guy, but the whole enchilada. Tennessee would have to commit to spending far above what they are currently spending. Hope they do.

If Hart's truly making a run at Smart it gives me some confidence he's at least aiming high. We may end up with another up and comer but it appears he's reaching out to some bigger names.

Howland or Marshall.
Only 2 I'd consider from any mentioned.
Pay the bucks.

Martin flirted with 2 decent jobs. The others listed have flirted with who?

If "people who know basketball" are saying Pitino, White, or Tyndall are a huge upgrade over Cuonzo, they don't know basketball.

Martin has gotten rejected from lateral jobs and settled for a downgrade.

We have no idea who we are going to get - but I know it's a better situation than what we were going to get with CCM next year. Next year the petition could hit 70k.

It's day 1 of the search. Jimmy Hyams is still dropping names from the Buzz Peterson coaching search. This board is simply dropping names from hottest names from the NIT & NCAA tourneys. My pet dog could probably predict better than all of the above who is going to be our next coach.

also Donnie Tyndall but no leader.

Bring on Junior and all will be well.

HELL NO! 1st and only call needs to be to Wichita St. coach Gregg Marshall and make him an offer he can refuse! He won at Wintrop and now at Wich st. 64-2 with a final 4 last 2 seasons. HMMM when was the last time UT went to the final 4? NEVER! I don't care if he took slippery rock to 64-2 and a final 4. Oh and if you've ever been to Wichita Kansas there isn't $h1t there. Bring him to Knoxville tomorrow!

I may be biased since I'm a MN fan, but there seems like absolutely no way Pitino leaves the Gophers. He loves coaching here, did an outstanding job his first year, and returns almost everyone for next year. Plus, Tennessee is on the same level, or slightly higher than MN as far as an attractive coaching job, so it wouldn't me much of a step up. According to Twitter, Pitino has already said no, just not publicly yet.

I don't know that the next Tennessee coach's name has even come up yet, especially if it is going to be an up and coming guy, which I think is a good idea. They'll land someone good though, just don't be shocked if he isn't the big name a lot of you want.

Interesting piece of info. Didn't know that. Hart has got to at least make a phone call to Miller. Make him an offer he can't refuse and he will be on the first plane to Knox.:)

BTO seems confident in his numbers but I have no idea. Of all the second tear coaches, Archie Miller impresses me the most.
