Any news from Basilio during this search should be taken with a grain of salt. And by grain, I mean like a 1 ton salt lick.

Passionate, yes. Reliable...no.

But he has "X" and the "vol Colonel" to back up his "facts" lol smh I do like his show but he kills me with his "sources".

Coaching Candidate Profile: Ben Howland - Blogger So Dear

Here's what a Wake Forest blogger wrote a few weeks ago.

Quotable:
Some question Howland's character and specifically reference a Sports Illustrated piece from 2012. I suppose I just interpret that piece differently than those. I view his demands of room temperature and the temperature of his water as just being detail-oriented and meticulous, which is a character trait of a lot of great leaders. It also appeared that he took appropriate measures to curtail the problems on his team. After hearing rumors that his team was going to rent a Party Bus on New Years Eve when they had practice the next morning, Howland mandated a bed check. That sounds like good management to me. The piece also discusses several of the 'Baby Bruins' class who did not take their bodies and practice seriously enough and as a result they received limited playing time. Again, an appropriate response to lack of effort. By Howland's own admission he could have handled the Reeves Nelson situation better and I believe he learned from that situation and if another situation like that arises he will handle is much better.

This somewhat quells my worries about his character. I don't think we can get anyone else with his pedigree unless we shell out the big bucks for Gregg Marshall. I would be happy to see Ben Howland come to UT and it appears he wants to.

Witch Doctor,

You are the sole reason I enjoyed signing on to GVX. So glad to see you posting to Vol Nation. If it weren't for your wit, the past few seasons would have been even more unbearable. Being a VFL in Florida, your comments make us laugh and make the challenges a little easier to take. I'd still like a 7-5 season next year if the bones can swing it!! Much appreciated.

You never really remember wins. You always remember the teams/coaches that knock you out of the tournament.

Florida/Donovan knocked him out twice I think? And Calipari when he at Memphis.

Could be great feeling for himself personally to consistently beat them!!!

I'd love to see Howland here. I think he'd prefer to stay on the left coast, but it's hard to downplay his ability to win at a very high level. UCLA's basketball program is insanely storied and with that comes tons of pressure. I don't think it would be the same here at Tennessee (until Bruce leaves Auburn at least, lol). Howland has proven his ability to both recruit nationally and coach winning teams. I think he's just about the best realistic option we have.

Howland is number 1 on my personal board. He's got a high Bball IQ, he's won big at a bigtime program, and in my opinion, he's learned from some of the player control issues. Those issues are the only real knock against him.

Howland's game would be very similar to Martin's, but with 19 years experience would possess the knowledge and ability to adapt to present talent.
Give him 2 years of recruiting and he'd have his team challenging for SEC titles.
Top of my list.

Successful coaches who flamed out like Howland did, tend to come back strong. Look at Eustachy as an example. Coaches have egos, and to be humbled like that lights a fire.

I was lukewarm on Howland until I heard he would likely bring Korey Mcray with him. This would be huge for recruiting in Atlanta area. That gives me more excitement about Howland.

One thing I like about Howland is he has done it different regions of the country, which tells me that he hires assistants that know their region well.

and that is a big piece. This isn't just about the HC, but about a staff he would bring. One thing I think Pearl did well was assemble a staff that each brought different things to the table and allowed him to do what he does best

Howland is a risk worth taking but I don't believe Hart would pull the trigger on it. UT just doesn't make daring moves like that.

Howland is my #1, but I don't think UT goes with him simply because I believe Dave Hart is a bit power mad and he doesn't want his coaches to have more power than him, hence Gruden was not hired and I believe Howland will demand a lot of power. Can I get a few more powers?! :loco:

I have heard Hart's ego might be a problem.
