Official Global Warming thread (merged)

Let’s hear what congressman “Smokey Joe” Barton has to say about tobacco and global warming. He’s had quite the history of anti-science propaganda. A must-watch!

Poignant to see the late Peter Jennings in action, and remember what it was like when there was at least some tough, probing journalism with a moral compass on mainstream media.

Denialism isn’t a position, it’s a tactic. The tobacco industry gave the exact same shpiel about there being debate over the causal connection. There wasn't then and there isn't now.

I have no intention of wrecking economies – quite the opposite. The longer we delay action on climate change the more costly it will be. You’re being shortsighted. The grand irony is that the longer we deny climate change is a problem, the more likely it will be that governments will have to take the draconian measures ‘skeptics’ fear.

A good place to start with tax cuts would be the income tax.

Depends on what you are calling costly? The most recent UN report pretty much says that the only really bad impact is going to be on the poor in the most impoverished countries. That was all I needed to know to keep on not caring about it.

And what are the "Draconian methods" governments would have to take?

U.N. Says Lag in Confronting Climate Woes Will Be Costly
Pay Now or Pay (Much More) Later: Delaying Action on Global Warming Only Worsens Cost, U.N. Says
Climate Denial Industry Costs Us $500 Billion a Year

What UN report are you reading? Sure it will be more difficult for impoverished countries to adapt, but if you think America’s wealth will shield it from the impacts of climate change you’re being naïve. It’s global climate change, and in today’s globalized society problems abroad do mean problems at home. And drought-ridden western states will tell you we already have problems at home.

Sticking with the tobacco theme, it’s easier for smokers to quit gradually than to quit cold turkey. Likewise it will be easier for us to cut back carbon emissions incrementally. The longer we wait the more damage climate change will do, and the more rapidly we'll have to divest from fossil fuels.

Nope. America will be fine. I was referencing the most recent UN rubbish released last month. The general theme was woe to the poor countries and poor people.

But what Draconian measures is the government going to take? Cut fuel supplies off? Nope. Use only untested "green" energy? Nope. Short of nuclear power there is nothing that can replace fossil fuels and still power our economy. Batteries aren't going to fly planes. Cargo ships don't do well with sails. If anything this administration has shown it will spew bs to its voter base and the world then do the exact opposite..and no one seems to really call them out on it. Obama's myriad of foreign policy blunders is a good example as are his alternative energy initiative failures. I am sure the UN would looooove to see the USA just stop using fossil fuels overnight..

Also thank globalization for being partly responsible for so many billions of dollars wasted on failed "green energy" companies in the US. Thank the EPA as well for regulating a large chunk of manufacturing in this country out of business or sending it overseas. The more I look at the climate change hysteria the more it appears to be a movement in the UN to get the USA to shrink its economy and spiral into financial hell. Most of the green energy start ups fail because they can't compete companies located overseas who buy raw materials from the US, ship them across the ocean, pay ling ping $1 a month to fabricate some hydrogen fuel cells, ship the product BACK to America and still sell it for 30% cheaper than American made products. Good old globalization, most favored nation trading bullcrap.

A liberal at work told me the US should lead the way in climate change and "who are we" to tell developing countries not to pollute since we already did so much ourselves..Yep..good old liberal guilt wrapped up in a blanket of bullsh!t.

I am however for reducing emissions as long as we aren't driving 3 cylinder 60 hp engine cars. Ford has a 2.3 4 cylinder turbocharged that gets 285hp and 305 torque..that's pretty good. I feel that the engineering and science will come where we can have smaller less polluting engines yet still retain that power we need to tow our jet-ski's and boats. And in the end that's all I really care about, my jet-ski. Ever been on a jet-ski? You could be in a swarm of locusts, pelted by raining frogs, near a forest on fire, and watching the sun burn out but still not give a rats ass. That smile that will be on your face will say "suck it climate change!" I'm on a mothaf@#king Jet-Ski!

Oh yeah, I quit smoking cold turkey. It was easy.

Here’s a good article on reconciling christian faith and climate change:

Climate Change Threats To 'The Least Of These' Compel Evangelical Christians To Act

Dr. Hayhoe is also featured in showtime’s new miniseries Years of Living Dangerously which premiers on Sunday. You can watch the first episode for free here. Dr. Hayhoe is on at 38:00 and 49:30

1. Can't take a guy serious with a named like HEY HOE!

2. What about satanists or atheists or agnostics who believe climate change is a bunch of bullsh!t?

Saying nicotine is not addictive is not anti science, it's called Business/Politics. These guys knew it was addictive. Why would they say it was? That cuts into profits and is not smart.

This is no more groundbreaking anti science than saying marijuana is not addictive, or brushing your teeth is addictive. Hell exercise can be addictive.

The problem is there is nothing scientific about climate science. It is based upon fictitious data, misinformation, bogus group-think peer review, and one-sided myopic viewpoint. It is solely leftist anti-capitalism and anti Americanism and nothing else.

Let the meme barrage ensue.

Nobody cares Bart whether they believe it or not.

If you don’t care why are you posting here? I’ve seen you do the same in other threads. Just ignore the thread if you really don’t care.

Nearly 3000 posts over 3 years says people do care.

1. Delaying action is costing us money. Your posts were mostly irrelevant.
2. Congratulations for quitting. It’s still much harder to quit cold turkey than to cut back gradually.
3. Yes I’ve ridden jet skis. They’re good fun.
4. Dr. Hayhoe is female. Hilarious joke you made.
5. Christians make up the majority of America, and the majority of opposition to science. Atheists/agnostics have no religious basis for rejecting science. I could see Satanists opposing action on climate change since they’re all about being selfish and whatnot.
6. Saying nicotine is non-addictive is both business/politics and anti-science. Just like denying global warming. Did you watch the video?

Or was it Mr. Mbeki?

If nobody cares why do YOU keep posting is a better question. The memes ruin any credibility you think you may have.

Again, why do you care? I keep posting because I like VN and refuse to let this important issue be distorted here. There are plenty of other places on the internet you and your conspiracy pals can spread misinformation without being harassed. Not here. It reflects poorly on our university and state.

A picture is worth a thousand words (I think FLVOL69 will agree... :))

And if you want it in words, here’s the Union of Concerned Scientists’ 2007 publication on Exxon’s well-documented disinformation campaign:

Smoke, Mirrors & Hot Air: How ExxonMobil Uses Big Tobacco’s Tactics to Manufacture Uncertainty on Climate Science

And Greenpeace’s 2010 publication on their work at exxonsecrets.org:

Dealing in Doubt: The Climate Denial Industry and Climate Science - A Brief History of Attacks on Climate Science, Climate Scientists and the IPCC

The industry-funded climate denial campaign is public record. Does it not concern you a little that the same organizations and even some of the same fake scientists from tobacco’s denial campaign are now leading your anti-AGW crusade?

Bart-

Watch " death by china" and get back to me.

Ok?

I’m always up for random Netflix docs. O, I will watch it for you if you watch something for me. I’ll give you the choice of two documentaries I’ve mentioned recently:

1) The first episode of Years of Living Dangerously (free here)
2) Kumare (Netflix)

Kumare actually has nothing to do with global warming, except that I think Lord Monckton might be doing a similar Sacha Baron Cohen impression. If you enjoy a good laugh at the expense of new age hippies you’ll like Kumare.

You're right Bart , a picture is worth a thousand words...

I hope that’s tongue-in-cheek, but wouldn’t be surprised if it isn’t.

Fair enough.

Btw death by china isn't just global warming. Touches on lots of things china related.

I'll watch those suggested tonight when I get in.
