Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

This defense will be much faster and much more violent than in years past. While they'll be young I like their potential much more than the groups we've been putting out there. I'm extremely anxious to see Gaulden and Berry push at the CB spot. Also I want to see if McNeil can hold off TKjr. :)

I was really hoping that McNeil would be further along this Spring than it seems he has been. He was a headhunter when we were recruiting him. Hopefully having TKJr breathing down his neck will give him all the motivation he needs to step up this year. Either way, it will be hard to keep TKJr off the field this year.

As excited as I am about the O&W game, I also can't wait until June when the rest of the 2014 class arrives.

I think the projected depth chart on both sides of the ball is going to change A LOT between June and August.

We're almost getting a full recruiting class of extremely talented kids who will provide immediate depth...on top of the 14 EEs who have been here since January. Pretty amazing.

If even just 4-5 of the summer arrivals are ballers like Moseley, Johnson, Malone, and Thomas, then we'll be in pretty good shape this year, IMO.

I share your enthusiam. Coleman Thomas, Josh Malone, Jalen Hurd, Emmanuel Moseley all immediate impact players. Also, don't forget Helm and Wolf. TE's will have a huge impact in this offense.

Someone that is getting left out a bit on here - probably just due to the embarrassment of riches in our '14 class - is Big Charles Mosley. I think he could be immediate impact guy at DT if he has his mind right. Jashon Robertson looks mean. Michael Sawyers and Derek Barnett will be immediate impact guys. Hendrix, as well.

Two guys I see potentially starting are Dillon Bates and TK Jr.

I don't have anything specific against McNeil - he seems to be a good guy and hard worker. But he seems slow and it appears they are looking for his replacement. It's telling he was the top ranked high school prospect in his class, and was so good relative to his peers that Sunseri and others at the time said he's the type of athlete future Tennessee classes should be filled with.

We are operating on a whole different level right now. It's fun!

We're going to be a very young team this fall but the talent level will be night and day from the last few years. Mistakes will be made but at least those mistakes will be made from 18yo's with a bright future ahead of them.

Totally agree. This is one time I will not be grumpy about the player mistakes and will go much easier on the coaching staff. There will be crappy mistakes - and there will be some brilliant ones as well. I am truly excited to see how this plays out over the next couple of years.

With this in mind, I will watch every game this year wearing shades.

i dont see JRM getting beat out of a starting position, IMO hes a starter till he graduates......Hes a team guy and works his a$$ off to b great from what ive read and been told.....

DGB suspended by Mizzou for violation of team rules. Sounds like he's following the Da'Rick Rogers school of thought when it comes to MJ.

"Violation of team rules" equals "Campus police found head buried...Scarface style...in brick of medicinal herb" :ermm:

I asked Brent Hubbs this question this morning.

He said that JRM has had a very solid spring and he thinks that starting position is fairly solidified.

Nice. He's our best coverage backer, from what I can tell. Picked off Riley a couple times now.

Sounds like some Mizzou fans think he may be gone for good.

Dude was a stud, and probably would have had an All-SEC season this year. Hopefully we won't have to face him.

Knowing our luck, he will be back just in time for our game.

I think Cortez the killer is gonna get a shot to take that spot too. I have a good feeling about him. Which means nothing, but the feeling is there. Picturing Gaulden and Sutton as the corners with Berry and Moseley and Foreman as the other options just makes me all giddy. I hope Gaulden can come in and ball from day 1. That might be expecting too much.

I agree that Dillon Bates could very well get the start at linebacker, especially if Maggitt plays more end. From some of the pictures and videos I've seen, he looks a lot more like an end than he did two years ago. He's going to make this defense a lot better just being on the field. But I think the only way he will be free to help us at end is if Bates and/or Weatherd come in ready to play. My money is on Bates. He just looks like a bad a to me.

Our defensive tackle class excites me as well. We should be better there, and I would imagine we are going to rotate lots of bodies.

Really really looking forward to seeing how good this class can actually be. This is basically the ideal recruiting class. Nothing could have been done in Tennessee athletics in the past year that was more important than this class of freshman we have coming in.

This is the beginning of the fun years boys.

Bold prediction: Jason Carr starts at left tackle

It makes you wonder if the coaches really think that's where his future is at, or if they just need the help over there. Either way, I was hoping he would be a guy we were going to count on the defensive line this year.

Who knows. Maybe he turns out to be a really good OT. That would be a twist, and a much needed infusion of talent to that unit.

TKjr is made to play early. His football IQ is higher than the other DBs in this class. He's also very developed from a strength standpoint so I think he's more physically ready to challenge now. McNeil will have a hard time keeping him off the field. I wouldn't be surprised to see 3 freshmen line up in our nickel sets this year.
