'15 TN ATH Jauan Jennings (UT commit 4/7/14)

I hope we get some notes on how the visit went, before the commitment announcement tomorrow

And there will be people on VN that will complain about getting Gentry over TG.

assuming we get gentry (fingers crossed), wont it be nice to at least be having a debate over whether or not we should have taken the four star qb over the five star one?

Butch really keeps the offseason interesting, that's for sure

Neiko Creamer got 2-3 weeks of offseason workouts before he was moved to defense, and he was adamant about being a WR.

The staff told D. Barnett that he is going to be a DE, but I doubt he ever practices a snap there.

It is what it is.

This. Happens all the time. No real shocker when guys get moved. Nothing shady or dirty about any of it...they are given their shot and many times the kid is ready for the move himself.

Sorry, but if JJ were willing to give QB a shot for only 2-3 weeks, I don't think he would be so vocal about being a QB and not an ATH.

Creamer did the same thing though. He kept saying that he wasnt going to play defense... and that he was certainly playing WR... now we see where he is

So Ive watched his highlights a few times and decided to watch them again right now. I want to see what he can do with proper teaching. Id like to see how is performs after learning proper mechanics. Right now it seems like hes anxious and giddy when the ball is in his hand, and it keeps him from setting his feet to put some oomph behind his throws. He relies on pure arm strength. If his tape is in chronological order, you can see improvement. Once he gets more experience, learns mechanics and the game slows down for him he could be dangerous

I agree with all of this. I've watched his film again today and there is great potential for JJ as a QB. He is an excellent fit for our offense imo. With his senior season under his belt and some proper coaching, kid could definitely become elite. I REALLY like his attitude...he's out to prove all the naysayers wrong and show what he's got. If JJ puts in the required work, the sky is the limit for him. Of course he's a little raw, but the tools are there...just needs some molding. Knoxville is the perfect place to achieve his goal....

It's obvious that Jennings wants to play QB, and I think Butch will give him that shot. I think it's probably also obvious that Jennings wants to play in the NFL, and I would hazard a guess that Butch will also encourage him to play the position that will most likely get him there.

Everyone keeps acting like this is some black and white situation: either he plays qb and Butch is telling the truth or Butch is lying and he plans on switching JJ the minute he gets on campus

I think as long as JJ is totally adamant that he wants to play QB, Butch will let him go for QB. But that doesn't mean Butch can't always be in his ear about his untapped potential at Safety/whatever other position he might be good at. and that doesn't mean that JJ won't eventually listen

It happens all the time. In most cases the kid sees the need for a change himself. If after 2-3 weeks he isn't developing as he should and sees himself losing ground to the other QBs I doubt he would have that much of a problem with a move. A lot can change once these guys get.on campus.

FTR, I'm in no way saying JJ shouldn't be a QB in college. As a matter of fact I think he would be an excellent fit in our offense. I'm only saying that moves happen all the time and you're not given much more than 2-3 weeks to prove yourself...

Well, if Butch and co only gave Creamer 2-3 weeks, surely they will do the same with all the kids.

Here is the thing. If Butch and Co are only planning on giving JJ 2-3 weeks to prove himself at QB, they don't need to be recruiting him at QB. Taking him may push away Gentry, Nunez and Gibson. Why risk that on a kid you are going to give less than a month to show out?

Creamer may have shown early he will not succeed at WR. Jennings is much more raw. So, he will obviously take more time to develop but he is a great athlete so he will most likely get longer to prove himself.

Not what i was saying. You were talking about how vocal JJ is about playing QB. I just said Creamer was the same way

Not what you were saying? You used Creamer as an example to say my opinion was wrong. All I am saying is, currently, JJ is not a SEC caliber QB, taking his commitment as a QB could push some more polished prospects away. I trust Butch's direction, but this one is throwing me for a loop.

I was 100% saying that Creamer was just as vocal about where he was playing, and he ended up moving. That is all.

Yeah, and like I said, if they only gave Creamer 2-3 weeks, surely they will do the same will all other recruits who are highly vocal about where they will play...

No. And I wasnt insinuating that either. Just that 100% of kids who are that vocal about a position, dont always end up there.

One thing on Creamer though is he wasn't highly recruited so not a ton of options like JJ and also Creamers dad always expected and prepared Neiko for the real possibility that he was going to outgrow WR. His dad thinks he eventually is a DE. JJ and his fam is all QB. I'm ok with that. Zero harm on giving him that shot because if you can learn to be a QB then he would be very dangerous with that athleticism at that position

What you put in bold was sarcasm. I did not actually think you were implying that all vocal recruits in question get switched. I know that not every vocal kid stays at that position. I was just sarcastically saying that using Creamer as an example has no bearing on JJ's recruiting.

No. We should be excited and happy that a QB as talented as Gentry decided to choose us and be done with it.

On the contrary...seems to me to be exactly what you would do if you were planning to take two QBs. Bring in one project with a very high potential elsewhere on the team, but one who likely won't spook the sure thing.
