Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

So the coaches say he gained 18 pounds and you don't believe that because you read it on a message board, but one guy comes on the same message board and says that he looks like he weighs 160 and you believe that? I don't know if he did or didn't but I'd like to know what your truth filter looks like.

Also, it's fairly common for guys to pack on a lot of weight when most of what they are doing is in the gym. Once they actually start practicing, keeping weight on isn't as easy. I remember a lineman from a few years back (Sullins?) trying and succeeding in putting on weight in the summer and then losing it all over again once fall practices started back up.

I am not saying anyone should panic, but tempering expectations is a must. Butch doesn't have much to work with this year and a tough schedule.

Also, it's like the open practice last year when peterman looked like the best QB. The fans started calling for him to start. You can't base your entire opinion off one practice and the opinions of high school or even other college coaches.

You don't even have to take it with a grain of salt. I just wanted to contribute what I could to the board. I don't have any subscriptions and I really appreciate Ron and others for their info. So I feel obligated to let y'all know anything I hear. GBO.

Like I said, I appreciate all contributors. I hope no one takes the salt comment the wrong way. I'm just saying that until they start playing games, no one is exactly sure what they have.

Again, I like hearing different accounts of the situation.

Really sucks about carr. Had high hopes for him to be a stud on the interior DL.

So did I, but Carr has always said he was a DE. He never had his heart into the DT position and was initially very unhappy over being moved there. Maybe a move to OL gives him a fresh start.

Haven't seen a lot on here about Charles Mosley - he is 365 lbs. That size alone means he could make an immediate impact at DT - if his mind is right.

I think Michael Sawyers will be an immediate impact guy at DT, as well.

I see Jashon Robertson ending up on offense. Barnett either DE or DT.

Charcoal accessories.

Admittedly, I only play a charcoal salesman on TV. I am, however, an advocate of the usage and proliferation of charcoal and a card carrying member of the National Association of Charcoal Grillers and All-Around Good Guys or NACGAAGG.

... a shot of tequila and a lime. I don't doubt these guys but CBJ was talking much worse this time last year so let's at least wait until the O&W game before we panic to much.

Tequila is good for you!

Honestly I think the offense is going to have the advantage in the spring. I doubt Butch wants the defense throwing the kitchen sink at them right now.

Wonder if that will hinge on Carr?

Dude weighs like 295 pounds. This isn't the 3-4, where did he think he was gonna play?

That guy is banking on a Dleague system being profitable. My draw to Tennessee has NOTHING to do with the players or their ages. I think I can speak for most on here in that regard. If Knoxville opens up a Dleague team, I won't give a damn. I don't have a favorite minor league team for baseball. I don't pay attention to NBADL at all. Too many assumptions and too much risk associated with this "revolution".

He's only gained 15 pounds, guy. Rivals had him at 6'6 280 coming out of high school. Carr was headed for DT the whole time.

And 247 shows him at 6'6 270 out of HS. Either way, there are a lot of DEs at 270-300 and a lot of DTs at 270-300.

As it happens in a lot of cases, not all kids are happy being forced to switch positions. Maybe he would have rather lost 10LBS and played DE. Happens all the time. Just because it does not matter to fans where a kid plays, to the kid sometimes it does. Hopefully Jason can get it al worked out. I'd hate to see him moved to OL. All that does is slow his development even more and sets him up for a lot of bench time.

Good post, completely agree.

There's nothing wrong with optimism, in fact it's a helluva lot healthier outlook, IMO. However, there are more than a few fans who pick and choose which information they use to create their opinions about the outlook of the season then go ape **** when the narrative that they created doesn't play out...i.e., see the football forum during the season.

I think we'll be a much more talented team this year but I'm not sure that translates into more than one more win. The schedule is tough and, I don't care what anyone says, the OL has a very high probability of being a big problem, among other areas.

However, I think the struggles we endure this year are the beginning of the end. Next year has the potential to the best team we've fielded in WELL over a decade.

I think we see glimpses here and there this season but I feel like consistency will be our biggest issue...BUT, a lot can change between now and fall practice. The talent is here but experience is lacking, once they put things together, the wins will come--hopefully that's this season. *fingers crossed*

You're right. Not all kids are happy about getting moved. The story linked below is a good example. Unfortunately for us it seemingly is having a happy ending for the player involved.

Scrimmage thoughts...

From John:

I thought overall that players benefited from the increased energy level and competition elements inside Neyland Stadium, and the defensive line definitely responded arguably to its best level this spring camp.

Riley Ferguson showed some dazzling flashes, but Ferguson also had another bad interception. Josh Dobbs didn't do anything of note, but he had a couple of plays where he took too long to get the ball out and also struggled with his passing accuracy.

Justin Worley showed his experience, as well as some playmaking ability. Worley scrambled for a touchdown and also evaded a pass rush to complete a key pass. Plus, Worley did not turn over the ball.

The offensive line, which has dominated much of the spring, didn't have its best day at all. The running backs were steady all day but didn't break the longer runs that had populated earlier scrimmage settings. Jalen Hurd had another fumble, the second time in as many practices.

Josh Smith had a good day, catching some touchdowns and also catching the ball in traffic. Ditto for Cody Blanc.

Perhaps the player who helped himself the most is Devrin Young, who shined in a variety of settings out of the backfield both with runs and screen passes.

Cam Sutton looked good in punt return, taking one to the house.

From Paul:

This was the best day for the defense I thought from what we've seen. A big part of that may have been that AJ Johnson was back on the field but the looked much better, particularly in the middle of the field.

The defense made a number of plays on the quarterback as the offensive line had a tough time containing the pass rush at times and that included the first team unit. Also, the defense held up against the run much better than they had in the past few scrimmages.

A couple of observations to why Jordan Williams playing end, helping the D get bigger inside using two true defensive tackles like Danny O'Brien and Owen Williams instead of using Jordan Williams as one of the tackles.

The bigger defensive line definitely made a difference in the game. And overall, they were much more active.

I thought the secondary made more plays and the receivers dropped too many balls today. But, the defense forced more turnovers with Jalen Reeves-Maybin having a nice interception.

There will be some "it worked out" situations just as there are some "that was a train wreck" situations. I'm just not a fan of moving players from the position they want to play. I see it more and more on here fans saying move a kid from DE to OT, move a kid from TE to OT, from RB to LB, from QB to WR/TE/S/CB or whatever. I feel if you need a S, recruit HS S's. If you need a TE, recruit a HS TE. If you need an OT, don't try and find a 235LB DE you can add 60LBS to and risk destroying a kids future with an experiment. ESPECIALLY when the kid is against the idea.
