Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

He wasn't great either. North just won the SC game. Those passes were thrown up there and he just made sick catches on them. UGA game he wasn't spectacular either. Howard was the one doing the work in that one. North also made a sick catch in that one on a bad throw.

All that I said was, "he wasn't bad". I never said anything about him being "spectacular".

I will be happy with a game manager type QB to go along with our talent at the skill positions.

Two years in the system, an improved running game and an OL that better fits the scheme, plus absolute freaks at WR...I think Worley (or any of the QBs) can be average SEC QBs and our offense will be good.

Defense on the other hand....

O-line will be fine and a RB like Hurd will give them even more confidence. Hurd, Lane, and Scott(I expect for him to come in and compete for carries as the No.3 guy) will help them out a lot running aggressive and downhill. They all have good vision too so that helps a lot when there's nothing there. With an aggressive running game that will open up even more with the weapons in the passing game. The WRs are as talented athletically as they were under Dooley. The TEs are young but Helm may be the young QBs best friend early on. And if he starts killing teams early on look out. We'll be putting up a lot of points with just smart QB play.

The defense worries the hell out of me. We'll be fast but undersized. We'll make some plays but we'll catch hell if we have to defend a power running team all game.

Fortunately, not many true "power running" teams left

I've said all along that this OL will be a better unit....would be a great story if a walk-on succeeds at LT. The D-line will be fine...especially when the Joe Hendersons and Hendrixs and Barnetts of the world start playing off the present crew.

Not sure what you mean by "succeeds". Succeeds in starting or succeeds as in being successful while he is playing. But to me, if we have a walk-on starting at LT we are effed. To think we are this far along and still in the same boat as when the Sullins boys were forced to play. Doesn't bode well.

I feel good about our offense despite the new OL and even think no matter who starts at QB the skill positions will make us a far more potent offense than many think. We may even surprise a few teams. Skill like we have, despite being inexperienced, combined with a bad couple of years gives good teams incentive to overlook us and us an advantage. While the odds are against us, I wouldn't be surprised to see us stun a team or two that we shouldn't.

The QB competition is good but we're not going to know anything solid any time soon. Just glad we'll likely know sooner than last year. Overall, I'm excited about this season despite the question marks.

Shouldn't these reports from coaching clinic attendees be taken with a grain of salt?

Personally speaking, and no offense to anyone here, but I take everything I read on VN with a grain of salt.

At the same time, I appreciate the information brought and the various opinions shared.

The more hands some info has passed through, the more cautious you have to be with it. Some guy catching a few things here and there in a coaching clinic does not a scouting report make. Heck, even coaches can be surprised by the time games roll around (good or bad), and we've just now hit April.

Having said that, I still appreciate all the various opinions and insights everyone brings. Makes for more interesting reading at the least. :)

I don't think it's time to panic for sure.

From a poster on VQ...

Thanks for posting Ron, I know it is not you but rather the VQ poster, but the "He says Malone looks almost as big as North" makes me question some things. There can obviously be some reasons he would say this, but I have a hard time believing this one. Hopefully it is true though.

Depends on what he meant by big. Height and stature is very similar but Malone will never be as thick as North. I don't care either way as you can just look at some guys and know they are future stars and those two def are

North really intrigues me. I think he has All-American potential, especially with Malone, Croom, and Pearson taking pressure off him.

Indeed. The potential is there. I felt like he was very raw last year, still learning the position, but as he becomes more natural and develops the skills... Wow!

... a shot of tequila and a lime. I don't doubt these guys but CBJ was talking much worse this time last year so let's at least wait until the O&W game before we panic to much.

I am not saying anyone should panic, but tempering expectations is a must. Butch doesn't have much to work with this year and a tough schedule.

Also, it's like the open practice last year when peterman looked like the best QB. The fans started calling for him to start. You can't base your entire opinion off one practice and the opinions of high school or even other college coaches.

You don't even have to take it with a grain of salt. I just wanted to contribute what I could to the board. I don't have any subscriptions and I really appreciate Ron and others for their info. So I feel obligated to let y'all know anything I hear. GBO.

Kind of like the Moseley has gained 18LBS claims. You can't buy into everything they say. Sometimes, they just make it all sound good.

So the coaches say he gained 18 pounds and you don't believe that because you read it on a message board, but one guy comes on the same message board and says that he looks like he weighs 160 and you believe that? I don't know if he did or didn't but I'd like to know what your truth filter looks like.

I did say after it was reported the 1st time, I did not buy it. Gaining 18LBS of muscle in a month is just not going to happen. If you believed it, that is on you.

He's skeptical if that much weight gain in such a short period of time, especially when sports teams are notorious for exaggerating measurables. I think that's fair enough.
