Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

The fact we may move a DT to OT may indicate worse news about what our coaches think of our current talent there.

Going to be a rebuilding year for sure. I'm holding off my predictions until after spring practice, but I'm leaning towards a 5-6 win year. Too many holes on the lines. Should be a more entertaining 5-6 win year than last one though.

Another 5 win season will be devastating for fan support and recruiting. Butch has to will this team to win 6.

I must be misunderstanding what I have read, which is very possible. I take it that Carr MAY get moved to O-line. Is that what Hubbs said - MAY? They plan to make a decision after a few more practices - right? Is that code speak that he WILL get moved? Or is that Butch trying to motivate Carr into giving 100% attention to his current role?

Where on the OL is he projected to play? Certainly not center. I'm assuming most likely OG?

Most likely due to depth issues. Outside of the starting OL and Blair, we are short. A serious injury on the OL and we are in trouble.

We have a lot of Options on the DL and have talent on DE with a lot of versatile players. Add in a talented incoming class and we should be ok.

Yes, yes, perhaps, definitely.

One thing to consider is the fact that last spring hubbs said Danny o brien might move to the offensive line. Dob gave us good minutes. But butch saying it and hubbs saying it may mean two different things. So who knows.

I just took it as Carr is a huge strong guy, just not quite as explosive as the staff would like. Explosive enough to block, but maybe he just couldn't quite get the penetration they want from the DL.

Tackle. Carr has long arms and is actually well built to be a tackle. Surprised because of the DLine depth, but Carr has physical traits to be a tackle.

In one sense I agree. In another I think fans just need to buckle up and recognize where we are as a program. Long term the future is very bright if people stick with Butch IMO.

This is what I think, and then I wander over to the basketball forum and realize people are super angry about a team that made a sweet 16 and I remember our fanbase is super bipolar.

I wish everyone could realize that Butch is building a great program through elite recruiting and it's only a matter of time til we can win games off talent alone ha

Last years 5-7 season was the most optimistic losing season I can recall.

If we end up with another losing season, all hell gon break loose.

6 wins plus a bowl win is a MUST, especially for recruiting and perception that we are on the right track.

I say let the season unfold and enjoy the ups and downs. Its student teacher day this Saturday and then the O and W the next. Let it come to you.

I'll believe Carr to OT when I see it. Our Oline is kicking the sh*t out of our DLine in scrimmages right now and we don't have anyone coming in this summer that will likely be anywhere near ready to take snaps at DT. Jordan Williams to the inside is getting pretty desperate as it is, imo. I think the "clock is ticking" could be (hopefully is) an attempt to light a fire of urgency under Carr. We need him at DT. We have Danny and Owen and no one else. We don't know how long it will take Sauls to get back, if ever. We really just don't have any other bodies for the inside of the DLine. None. Absolutely None! But hey that just how I see it.

Yep. And the small but loud and overzealous section of our fan base will flip their you know whats and be calling for his head.

And if we win 6, we'll probably win 7 with a presumably weak bowl game opponent.

Ya, we will not have a great recruiting class with another 5 win season. This team will be about as good as last year I think, better in some places worse in others, but our schedule is a little, tiny bit easier. 6 is possible, but I'd have to dig deep into my homer side to predict it.

I don't think we will have a top 5 class again, but butch can still sell the future to these kids. His only full recruiting class will only be freshman, that's an easy sell for any salesman worth his pay. Regardless of the season, I think we still pull a top 10 class.

It's actually not entirely uncommon per this article on the Sausser and Spurr LAWBLAWG.

We have become too familiar with the term “Tebowing”, but did you know it represents a registered trademark? That’s right, Tim Tebow owns the trademark, “Tebowing”. In fact, he owns one trademark registration and twelve pending applications for variations of “Tebow”. Prior to his registration, others have wrongfully attempted to cash in on his name. In addition to Tebow’s thirteen, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) shows twenty-one applications using a variation of the name “Tebow”. The applied for marks range from “It’s Tebow Time” to “What Would Tebow Do”. Needless to say, all the trademarks filed without Tebow’s consent received a rejection on a Section 2(a) basis for a false connection with a living individual.

As the NFL draft approaches, the young draft hopefuls need to start thinking about protecting their brand. A lot of athletes already understand the importance of trademark protection. Tiger Woods currently stands at eighteen trademark registrations that make use of his image or name. Jimmie Johnson owns two registered trademarks and one pending application. Nike owns the Jeter logo, named after Derek Jeter. David Beckham currently enjoys six registered trademarks and one pending application. Victor Cruz owns eight pending trademark applications, none of which include his end zone salsa dance. However, he does have a few trademarks pending for his Young Whales brand. Lebron James owns four registered trademarks and three pending marks. Surprisingly, Lebron James does not own “King James Active wear”, the registration, filed in 2009, belongs to a South Carolina resident. Athletes understand that their image sells. As a result, some seek to protect that image through registrations with the USPTO.

I'm with you. I think he has one more year to sell the future and he can parlay it into a nice class, provided our fan base doesn't openly abandon him and start signing petitions, etc. The success of next years class will hinge in part on how our fanbase reacts to another tough season, I think.
