Deal With It

I am not believing the total gloom and doom. To me, it is not about greatness vs. 5-20 seasons. It is about consistently meeting expectations. Cuonzo is not a bad coach. He has just consistently not quite met my expectations - not counting the latest run, of course.

I don't see how overall he hasn't met expectations?

Year 1 = Overachievement
Year 2 = Underachievement
Year 3 = Met Expectations

To me he has very easily over the course of his 3 years met expectations. The expectation next year will be to make the tournament and hopefully win a game or 2.

Sometimes I think we have the worst complaining fanbase in all of college sports (sometimes). I am so glad I support UT for all the right/good reasons. Not just winning but morals. Learning how to support not just the perfect or the loud or the big bangs but those that stand with integrity and balance. Not just those that win quickly but those that want to build good men/women and when they win its with character. In the world of the internets I am not the majority but in the world of other UT fans around me, most all have the same feeling. They just don't get on the forums to cry all the time.

Who cares where we were picked? Shows the SEC media doesn't know basketball. Can't call a season a success when we didn't even make a 68 team field. Need to hang your hat on something else.

Your expanding the scope, I said exceeded expectations or over-achieved. Your losing your perspective.

All I want to know is if every fan base like ours 50-50 split, or what, we have never been a elite power in basketball year in year out never will, just like Kentucky in football, they will never be elite in football , at least we have 3 or 4 year runs in basketball where we contend for the SEC we will never be like Kentucky, where they just go out and take what they want and leave the leftovers for everybody else, that's the truth the truth hurts sometime, but it is just the way it is.

I've noticed some Vol fans are excellent at moving the goal posts.

#1 - Martin has to make the tournament or he's gone.

Makes the tournament

#2 - Well, the "play in game" isn't really making the tournament.

Wins the play in game

#3 - OK, now he's in the tournament, he has to win some games.

Upsets the #6 seed

#4 - Well, the 6th seed wasn't any good, he needs to win another game.

Wins another game

#5 - Well, Mercer is terrible, he's going to have to make it to the Elite 8 before I'm impressed.

Loses to Michigan by a basket

#6 See, I told you he was terrible.

Thats the babies of the fanbase for you. Everyone of them are talking like he's going to flop from this point on. How do they know that?

You mean the Michigan game where Cuonzo once again showed his close-game brilliance by having his PF handle the ball near the 3 pt line with ten seconds left? Yeah that sold me, too.

Who do you think Michigan would rather play in the NCAA, a Vols team coached by Counzo or Bruce?

Here is my humble opinion on the whole situation. I have been following this program since we played at stokely and have only seen a couple of good coaches and Martin isn't one of them yet. What I have seen on the court for the past 3 years has been teams that have under achieved and not played to potential. Maybe that is because he was playing with players that were built for Pearl's style and not a ground and pound game he likes to play. I also think he will never succeed here (in some fans minds) because of the Pearl factor. All these fans who point to the end of the season run just blow my mind, you ask the question who did we beat and they list team. Who cares, we should have beat those teams, to be honest we should have beat those teams all season, but we didn't and some losses where really bad. Let be honest fans - if we put this team in the ACC or The Big Ten or any other major basketball conference - Would this team have succeeded? My opinion is no but hey I could be wrong.

So all that said, I'm i sold on Martin, no not yet. Ask me next year after we see what he puts on the court and how that team preforms. Remember those players should be his and his style should work. My fears is, right now, we are lucky to be a win half our games and end up 500 and going back to the NIT. But hey if I'm wrong I will glady say it - how many of you hear blasting all of us saying things like this, are willing to do that?

I wonder how many people would agree with your statement about making the tourney next year? If we don't does he meet expectations?

Tennessee has finished 3rd or fourth in the SEC the last 3 years. I would say that is good in my book! The SEC has two teams in the final four this year. Tennessee finished right behind Kentucky and Florida. What do all of you complainers want out of the basketball program? Would you rather go back to the Wade Houston, Buzz Peterson days when we were the laughing stock of the conference? The football team has sucked for 10 years now. The basketball team is a winning program. Stop trying to tear them down and support them if you are a true Vol fan. I've been a Tennessee fan for 34 years and most of you negavols don't know what your talking about! Move to another state!

Oh, they realize it, they just think they are smarter than everyone else. That's the funny thing, when you think everyone else is crazy and you're the sane one, it's generally the reverse of that.

I've yet to see a single media outlet horse laughing. It was very briefly mentioned during our tournament games that fans weren't happy.

Heck, around the A&M game that same media called us the biggest disappointment in NCAA basketball and later a national columnist said we should hire Pearl back.

You mean this national columnist?

Gregg Doyel Is A Rather Disagreeable Little Fellow

I've said repeatedly that someone there wants him. Others are looking to go another direction. It's a mess.

That's funny because Andy Katz and Gary Parrish both said the job was his if he wanted it, and that after his interview they thought he was theirs.

It was mentioned in just about every game that Dykes called and several others. were you even watching?

Mention or they were laughing at us? I know that once we got on the late season streak and in our first game in the tourney Dykes mentioned it. But the mentions of his hot seat around the second Texas A&M game weren't incredulous at all. I think Dykes even said Cuonzo was playing for his job.

The media blows with the wind. You lose and they down you, you win and they act like they never doubted.

When Martin made the tournament and won a game or two, my criticism ended. I will echo Hart in saying "that is the expectation at UT." He has my full support going into next season. But, the measuring stick doesn't change.

Calling the petition ridiculous was a mention?
