I am not believing the total gloom and doom. To me, it is not about greatness vs. 5-20 seasons. It is about consistently meeting expectations. Cuonzo is not a bad coach. He has just consistently not quite met my expectations - not counting the latest run, of course.
Your expanding the scope, I said exceeded expectations or over-achieved.
I've noticed some Vol fans are excellent at moving the goal posts.
#1 - Martin has to make the tournament or he's gone.
Makes the tournament
#2 - Well, the "play in game" isn't really making the tournament.
Wins the play in game
#3 - OK, now he's in the tournament, he has to win some games.
Upsets the #6 seed
#4 - Well, the 6th seed wasn't any good, he needs to win another game.
Wins another game
#5 - Well, Mercer is terrible, he's going to have to make it to the Elite 8 before I'm impressed.
Loses to Michigan by a basket
#6 See, I told you he was terrible.
I don't see how overall he hasn't met expectations?
Year 1 = Overachievement
Year 2 = Underachievement
Year 3 = Met Expectations
To me he has very easily over the course of his 3 years met expectations. The expectation next year will be to make the tournament and hopefully win a game or 2.
And don't even realize they're being horse laughed in the media.I've noticed some Vol fans are excellent at moving the goal posts.

I've yet to see a single media outlet horse laughing. It was very briefly mentioned during our tournament games that fans weren't happy.
Heck, around the A&M game that same media called us the biggest disappointment in NCAA basketball and later a national columnist said we should hire Pearl back.

It was mentioned in just about every game that Dykes called and several others. were you even watching?

Calling the petition ridiculous was a mention?Mention or they were laughing at us? I know that once we got on the late season streak and in our first game in the tourney Dykes mentioned it. But the mentions of his hot seat around the second Texas A&M game weren't incredulous at all. I think Dykes even said Cuonzo was playing for his job.
The media blows with the wind. You lose and they down you, you win and they act like they never doubted.
