BREAKING NEWS!!!Cuonzo Martin removes name from Marquette search

Yep, Wojo to Marquette.

Jeff Goodman ‏@GoodmanESPN
Marquette has hired Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski, sources told ESPN.

He was a Rivals top 150 player. Pretty much as high of a 3 star as you can be actually.

I can understand that, but lots of people see that "3" and think that player will suck.

Also, I thoroughly expect Hubbs to improve enough to be a centerpiece of the offense in the future.

It seems pretty obvious that Hart convinced him to stay. I know it doesn't fit into your false narrative but that is how it is being reported as of now.

I don't think Marquette was going to hire him...Wojo was there man....and as far as the Vols and CCM's negotiations going forward...UT needs to be very careful...obviously....because I think, and that's all I have, that IF Marquette offered the job CCM takes it. As a businessman, you NEVER lock yourself into a long-term deal that's on shaky ground at best. So Dave Hart's abilities as an AD will be center stage going forward... And I hope CCM stays and I hope he win's 10 national championships...but this is the real world....JMO

He may be the guy, or he may not be. But that's the same gamble you would be taking if you were to hire a new coach. There are no sure things. He's proven that his teams get better as the year goes along. That has happened EVERY single season he has been our coach. We have played our best basketball at the end of the year. Sure, we would all like to have gone undefeated this year. But good grief, some of these folks need to give the man a break.

He just led us to the Sweet 16. We have momentum. If his last three years are any indication, even in a rebuilding year, next year's team will most likely give themselves a chance at the end of the season.

Cuonzo has proven success now. His message has a history of working. Without this tournament run I wouldn't feel this way. But college basketball is literally ONLY about tournament runs. The whole sport is built around it. Lots of teams didn't go on a run, so we need to stop dismissing it like it's not a big deal. It is a big deal. It was fun and we were relevant and on tv and radio for an entire extra week that 95% of other basketball programs were not. That is valuable. That kind of exposure makes coaches valuable. I hope he stays.

I hope you are right, I don't think you are but I hope.

My crystal ball tells me in 2-3 years we will be in worse shape than we were when he took over and paying him a buyout to get rid of him.

I don't know about telling Zo they weren't going to hire him, but I feel after how it played out, Zo wasn't offered the job while he was up there interviewing.

You think its more probable that Martin was higher on Marquette's list than Wojo or that Martin was told that they weren't interested?

I think he was a legit option but also knew they were going to interview others. I think he went back to Hart and he took care of Cuonzo at UT before Marquette ever made a real decision. Not sure Wojo being hired really confirms who was told what or when

I think this is accurate. We don't really know what happened so at the very least the "Yea Cuonzo! He's loyal!" posts should stop.

If the UT contract extension is high $/ years, you can assume Martin pulled himself out due to a counter-offer. If there is little raise and a short extension, maybe Marquette passed him over. It will come out soon enough.

if that's your criteria then there are only a handful of coaches who can be defined as "loyal"

Again this confirms Martin did not withdraw name, he was told they were not going to hire him.

I think it infers the complete opposite IMO. Hiring an unproven assistant to coach a team that has made the tournanment something like 10 out of the last 12 years with a final four appearance seems unbelievable to me.

There is probably less than a handful. And that shouldn't be held against them.

I have a hard time being upset with a person who takes a better opportunity. If that comes with stability and more money then good for them

IMO loyalty is extremely overrated when it comes to sports and coaches

Can't believe we "took care of" a coach who doesn't want to be here. He was out interviewing for another job. You don't think he'll jump as soon as he can? Why reward that?

We got lucky getting to play Iowa, UMass and Mercer. Once we played a real team(not a great one) we were blown out until Michigan let up and allowed us back in it. We beat one good team all year and suddenly Cuonzo is pure gold. We lose 4 of our top 5 players. Just look at bench production down the stretch. That is what we'll see next year. Cuonzo is very average at best.

Michigan just felt sorry for us and "let" us back in the game? Ok. Makes sense to me.

He turned the Job down. Even after all the crap he took this past year he still turned it down.
