Badass? No.

Improving. Yes. Contrast the way his team responded to him at the end of the year with how our football team responded to Coach Dooley at the end of his third year. That is quality leadership and coaching compared to the quit-fest was saw with the football team. It would've carried over to next year's team.

Positive impact on national perception of UT? Yes. The class treatment of the Iowa coach, and his taking the time to praise Martin and our players, was a strong positive for Tennessee.

I wish him well in the future. He was a man of character and dignity, traits that would've stood his future recruiting efforts in good stead with players and their families.

Now we find out just how committed this generation's leadership is to Tennessee basketball.

A guy like Wojo would never consider a school like Tennessee, I don't think, because he knows basketball is not going to get the resources.

It's the difference between Howland calling Marquette and really wanting the job and Tennessee having to roll out the carpet and promise him things Martin has done without.

It may not be a blue blood like Duke or UK, but they spend like they are. The rest of their athletic programs depend on the basketball program like we depend on our football program.

For Martin and his assistants, it's not a lateral move like many think.

And not directed at you but since we are discussing...Marquette has talked to at least three other people that we know of besides CCM. Shaka Smart absolutely one of the hottest coaching names the last few years. Howland who wants the job badly and is one of the best of those thought to be available and Wojo, the hottest assistant name in the country...and Cuonzo...that's a pretty badass group of candidates to be amongst, wouldn't you/ya'll agree?

I have. Actually, I've done a little more than that. Martin did his due diligence on taking the UT job, I reckon this will be even easier...

No man. Not really.

Wojo has never coached, everybody has offered Smart and everybody has been rejected and Howland apparently has coaching herpes.

i'll answer that one.

i think buzz believes that va tech is a potential sleeping basketball giant.

there are a lot of players in the maryland/virginia area. with the destruction of the big east, georgetown may fade as a basketball power. maryland has left the acc. virginia has never been consistently good.

i think he believes he could truly be a force there, even though no one ever has.

People seem to ignore the fact that the SEC was awful, that team finished 19-15 with losses to absolutely terrible teams. Not moderately bad teams, completely terrible ones.

I'm further baffled after reading the rest of the thread that people think the light has suddenly came on for Zo.

We won 8 of the last 11 this year.

9 of the last 12 last year.

9 of his last 12 in his first year.

Did he suddenly get better as a coach at the end of those years.

I have no more faith that if Zo comes back next year, that we don't get off to a crappy start again, than I do in General Neyland's ghost showing up and boxing Saban's ears this fall.

This years team just played the RPI game a little better and was loaded with veterans who gutted out just enough wins to make the tournament.

I agree with all but Georgetown. That will never happen imo.

He does. He has coached with class, and for that he deserves our respect.

He recruited under difficult conditions, and had set himself up to possibly recruit better players more consistently.

He made the Sweet Sixteen, and some late games we actually dominated. (I hate that I missed the Virginia game this year.)

...but yeah, there was a lot of major underachieving this year (and all three years), that just seemed inexcusable to me. We should aspire to do better than that. I would not have been upset if he had stayed, but I am anxiously waiting to see what comes next.
