Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Memphis has a beautiful riverfront, but they can't take full advantage of it because downtown is such a craphole. Same is true of the Forum and the Redbirds stadium. Beale is a dump. Parts of midtown are great, though.

A couple years ago I visited New Orleans for the first time, and it was unbelievable how similar the two cities are. Biggest difference is that NO has a better sense of self and the city doesn't take itself nearly as seriously, which makes it a great party town.

I think many of you still equate the images of Memphis circa 1985 with today. Downtown Memphis looks nothing like it did 30 years ago.

Main St has been completely rejuvenated and Beale St cleaned up considerably. Lot of money has flowed in over the last decade or so.

New Orleans has a hidden gem on about every block. Something you weren't expecting and you probably wouldn't find unless you live there or were with someone who did or does.

Biggest regret of my life is probably that I spent my year there living in Slidell because I was intimidated by size, layout, and reputation of the City.

Never been to Memphis, not comparing the two, but after going back and visiting friends a few times, I think New Orleans is underrated by visitors and outsiders.

Does Martin really think the fanbase at Marquette will be any better if they are are not winning...Basketball is all they have lol

A bball school understands that bball is a postseason sport and not to make ridiculous rash judgments midseason when anything could still happen. Apparently our fans have a football mindset and live and die by every regular season bball game.

Collierville is vibrant? LOL.

There is absolutely nothing in Collierville but sub divisions. Great place to raise a family, nice schools, but really nothing more than a sea of brown...

Germantown is definitely better than Collierville, but nowhere near as vibrant as Mid Town or Downtown Memphis

Again, for the second time, I'm not the originator of the word vibrant here.

I lived there until 2006. I've only visited twice since then so it may have improved, but when I was there in 2010 it sucked.

That place on 3rd with Jillian's was empty. Almost all the businesses were gone. Beale was fun for a night but still seedy and dirty. None of my friends from college and high school that still live there ever go downtown because it's just not nice. No reason to leave midtown.

Probably so. One of my buddies is from Cookeville and he has good things to say about it, but so far my memories of Cookeville are, well...blurry. Spankies, man.

Lol! Many of my opinions of places I've been are based off similar experiences. St.Louis comes to mind. I hate the place, but others rave about it. I base it off of bad night out.

Yup it's kinda sad..and I'm obviously not speaking about everybody but we have one of, if not THE dumbest, fan base in all of college sports.

Our fan base as a whole may not be the most patience. We may all be stupid. But what we have is passion. Sometimes our love for our team overrides rational thought. Passion is something our fan base isn't lacking and any coach that is worth his salt is going to want a fan base like ours. You don't want a bunch of people that are ok with losing. If Cuonzo thinks about it, he will know that the team under performed in the regular season. That is a fair assessment. Some of that may not have totally been his fault, but as the head coach you shoulder that. He rallied the troops and made a good run in the tournament and now everyone loves him. We are fanatical. We love our team. Make them win and we will love you.

I think he was nicely trying to point out that you all need to take your talk about "s****y cities" to the off topic forum.

In other words, quit mucking up this thread.

I know what he was saying, and I didnt mean to come across as a di#k, but truth be told some of these threads would be quite boring if it wasn't for the extra talk. IMO, its kinda the way in this forum to keep popular threads alive while we wait on the news. Also, as that news arrives it will light up the tweet thread or the Hot news.

Kinda wish Zo wouldn't leave since that'll make Stokes' NBA decision real easy for him and I still want to see Stokes play football. That being said, can't really blame him for taking his ball and going home after some of the crap he took from people this season, including myself.

Agree. Martin won me over in those final weeks of the season. Best coaching job I've seen in UT sports in years. I think he'd do well here long term. Instead, sounding like we are in another coaching search with a lot of uncertainty and another 2-3 year rebuild.

That's what our fanbase wants though, by and large. If a coach isn't winning a national title in year three, he doesn't belong here. UT's for winners only.

Jesus, people wanting Holly fired, wanting Butch fired if he goes 5-7 again, wanting Zo fired before he had a full chance.

We are an incredibly unrealistic fanbase

As you mention, emotions cannot be used to make rational decisions. Many times emotions cloud good judgment.

These are jobs for coaches, not for fans. As a coach, you don't want an irrational fan base who gets too high after winning and too low after losing. All coaches want to win but realize that you most likely won't do it every year, especially with injuries and other outside influences. Coaches want stability and reason among their fans.

Was incredible to watch that team grind back into it against Michigan imposing their will. To my mind that was coaching. I am not sure Michigan was the better team.

FWIW, Vol basketball signees are saying that Martin and staff are telling them that they will be coaching them at Tennessee next year, and not to pay attention to rumors that he is going to Marquette. Also, that Martin and Hart would be meeting in due time to discuss his future.
I imagine that Hart will need several days to read the message boards and to check and see how many of the 32,000 petition signers are actual donors or season ticket holders before he meets with CCM and makes a decision about his future. I can't see him making a decision before he does that.

HaHa! Are you living in a "Dream World"? Fans cannot be rational and always know more than coaches. :) j/k
