Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

I didn't think it was a terrible call. It was close but I could see it either way.

I agree that it might have technically been the right call. But wasn't the right time to call it. I'm all for letting the players play in that spot. Nobody wants to watch the refs call something like that with 6 seconds to go.

Still a great game by the team. I'm proud of their effort.

I'd rather have Stokes at the line than McRae.. McRae had already missed 3 or more free throws. and I still say Stokes was trying to draw the double then hit J-Mac.

Maybe so, but you are (or at least should be) calling a play to score, not to draw a foul. And I'd much rather have McRae driving than Stokes in this situation.

And even if you are trying to get a double then hit McRae, I'd rather get McRae moving and let him drive to the basket than shoot a 3.

@ESPNStatsInfo: Jordan McRae is 3rd player with at last 24 pts, 6 reb, 4 blk in a Sweet 16 game. He joins Kevin Love (2008) and Tim Duncan (1996).

Great finish to his career. Left it all on the court.

Well great game, and we can complain about the charge all we want but the fact is if McRae had hit some of those free throws then that would have given us those few points we needed to win. Thats just an example, I'm not blaming McRae for the loss or any individual just saying that one call did not cost us the game.

Heck of a game and I'm proud of our boys. They were down at least 14 and still made it a nail biter at the end. They never gave up and played hard until the end. They also brought UT basketball back into the national spotlight and had all the media outlets talking about how they could have easily been this years surprise team to make the final 4.
I also have no doubts that after watching that finish, that if we had started the game better we could have easily ran away with that game and won with our bench playing the last 5 min.

He drew the double but he didn't look like he intended to pass. I agree that was open though McRae could have dove down the lane and possibly had a dunk or layup.

Oh I agree, I wasn't sayin he should try to be fouled, I was just commenting on who if I could pick to shoot free throws.

I don't know the play call obviously, but I think it was designed to draw the double and hit a mcrae slashing through the lane with josh Richardson rotating to the top of the key as a 2nd option.

Typically the refs wouldn't call anything which would have led to a turnover. The problem with the play is there was too much contact not to call something. Block charge is the hardest call to make and I just wish we didn't have Stokes driving to the goal as our final play.

"phantom contact" he did touch him but the guy anticipated the move and was bracing to fall back before any actual contact... IMO of course.

That loss hurts as bad as the... well, let's see here:

2007 SEC Championship game
2009 Alabama
2010 LSU
2010 North Carolina
2011 Michigan State Elite 8
2012 Florida
2012 Mizzou
2013 UGA
2013 Vandy

Yeah.... We're pretty much guaranteed at least 1-2 utterly heartbreaking games per year.

You may be right. I'll have to rewatch to see where McRae was. When watching live I didn't see much off-ball action and thought a pass out would've been for a 3.

A no call probably would've been best. I felt like the Michigan player was set, so not a block. But he flopped so I hate to see a charge. But as you said, way too much contact to just not call anything.

I can understand that point of view but I feel like there was definitely contact. Stokes is a bull and when he lowers his shoulder it is going to get called. Like I said, best case was a no call in which they get the ball anyway. I just hate that it ended with us not getting a shot. I feel like the ball in the hands of McRae or JRich and it would have been hard for them to defend without fouling.

he might not've cut yet in the video. I just know him cutting and josh rotating would have made for a decent play call. you get your a chance for your 3 best players to touch the ball.

Refs hate the SEC. That being said, I hope UK gets beat. Michigan and FL can both go **** off.

Tough play. Here is the play from behind.

I just noticed on this video that McRae had moved to the right of Stokes and when Stokes started his drive and the other defender doubled up on him that it looked like Stokes was going to pass out to McRae who was not covered but the ball got knocked loose (before the so-called "charge" call). Stokes was looking in the direction of McRae. Too bad he didn't get the ball to McRae.
