Top247 junior defensive end Kyle Phillips of Hillsboro High School in Nashville, Tenn. whos ranked the states No. 3 overall prospect in the industry-generated 247Sports Composite for the 2015 class was among the high-priority targets in attendance, returning to Tennessee for the third time in less than five months
The Vols have emerged as one of the early favorites for Phillips, and Saturdays visit did nothing to change that. He said the junior day allowed him to get an even better feel for Tennessee coach Butch Jones, linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen, defensive line coach Steve Stripling and the rest of the Vols staff. Phillips said Jones stayed with him just about the whole time, making it abundantly clear to Phillips that hes one of UTs top targets in the 2015 class. In fact, Tennessee went out of its way to deliver that message to Phillips. He said the Vols talked with him about being the center of the recruiting class, and he admitted that was kind of eye-opening. Phillips appears to be a high-priority target for a number of schools, with more than 20 offers already under his belt. But its safe to say Tennessee has recruited him as aggressively as any team to this point
Phillips said his father accompanied him on the trip, making his first visit to Tennessee, and he liked it a lot. Its also worth noting that Phillips grandfather is a UT fan. He posted on his Twitter account more than two weeks ago that his grandfather sent me a UT hat in the mail. The 6-foot-4, 255-pound Phillips has been consistent in saying that he doesnt expect to decide on a college for at least a few more months, but Tennessee still appears to be in good shape with him right now. He said he might visit the Vols again as early as this spring.
