Would Hart make a decision based on......

We had a coach that was like a family member. He mingled with fans said the right things won the big games was always in the NCAA. That coach got fired he left us we felt like we had lost a close friend a family member someone fun to be around. He was gone we wanted him back.

In comes this new guy taking the place of our beloved family member. This guy is quiet doesn't say much. He doesn't say much about games or how were gonna kick somebody's butt. He just goes about his business and without much left on the roster has a winning season. In season two he wins again and we miss the NCAA although it appears evident we had a good enough resume to get in. Year three we barely get in and we realize the bias of the NCAA committee against the SEC. We should have been at least a 8 or 9 seed with out SOS and RPI. Now this quiet coach is making all the right moves making all the right calls the team is playing at a very high level.
Our previous love has moved on to a rival school he is now their coach and our replacement for him suddenly has the team winning in the NCAA. Suddenly everyone feels bad about the past and he is suddenly becoming a great coach He is getting more love we have moved on from the past.
The point being it may have been tough to get to know this new guy and we still may not know him well enough even though he has been here three years. We were kind of suspicious of this soft spoken person we didn't like him as much as the last guy. Suddenly just two games into the tourney we are changing this guy can coach he has this team playing at a high level. Suddenly he is likeable. Hopefully we will give him our full support after this season is done and the next one comes around. There are still gonna be a lot of peaks and valleys it happens to every program just ask the Duke Blue Devils, Cincinnati Bearcats or even Shaka Smart nothing always works out the way it was planned.

what other AD's in the SEC do?

In the SEC recently, most schools have hired some well-known and successful Head Coaches. It seems the SEC are becoming a league with a lot fighting power among the names.

Auburn - Bruce Pearl, South Carolina - Frank Martin, Kentucky - Calipari, Florida - Donovan, Arkansas - Mike Anderson, etc.....

Let's say a school like Georgia, Ole Miss, etc... fires their coach who was never a huge success.

What if one of these schools get a "splash" hire like Ben Howland?

You think Hart would look into a "stronger name" just because of that? Or do you think he's not concern at all what the other schools are planning on doing?

Is this the same Howland many around here were strongly against because of who he wasn't? Now he's a "splash" hire? Really?

Howland put 3 incredible seasons together at UCLA. He followed them up with 5 marginal seasons (considering talent) and a scandal. I mentioned this before, but Howland went 14-18 with 8 4* players on his roster. That is pretty impressive.

I can only imagine how big of a laughing stock we'd be if we do win tomorrow, then lose next week, and Martin is fired.

I have faith that Hart isn't nearly as moronic as some of these posters, he seems halfway intelligent which makes keeping Martin a pretty easy decision.

At this point, there is no way you fire him. He has not coached well in game at times this season for whatever reason. Could not motivate the players or X and O's or timeouts or whatever else you could see that many complained about. It was like he was a dead man walking. Regardless, he has a chance to be sweet 16 or even better. You always judge by results. If CCM and UT had won 25 games this year despite any short comings in game, no one would've been concerned about time outs ect. Winning is what fans want to see.

If he can get another win and then perhaps more wins, guess what will happen next? He will be able to recruit better just because he shows he has WON. CBJ is a great recruiter but to keep it going he has to eventually WIN. If CCM get the players, he can win regardless. Plenty of "good" coaches out there who are good because they WIN and not because they draw up the greatest plays every game.

He gets you to the sweet 16 and you give him a two year extended contract and he must go get some players. At that point, he WINS then he could be here a long time because he should be able to recruit to a school like UT with a sweet or elite run.

As a Tech fan, I have seen them lose to UConn in the championship game. Afterwards, the program went downhill with a bad coach. Hope that doesn't happen here. But, if he wins one more game, you have to give him the extention and a chance to succeed or fail.

I agree; plus he knows the same people who are still clinging to any hope Martin is canned would be the first to blast him if he did do that and the expected PR disaster happened and we're stuck with someone even worse than Martin.

Correct.

It just makes no sense to fire him, if we were Duke or Kentucky, ok. However, realistically how much do people think hart is gonna spend on a bball coach with the current situation like it is?

$2m? Maybe $2.25m tops?

Ok, so who you gonna get for that price? You're likely gonna be looking at candidates who are up and comers and hoping to hit a Homerun. Pitino Jr, Tyndall, White etc all those guys would be your likely resume level candidate...so you're gonna pay a buyout for Martin, buyout for one of them, and a salary to a coach who has a similar resume to the guy you currently have?

Seems to me the smart thing for hart to do would be to ride out Martin and see just exactly what he's got, and just how much he can continue to improve and develop.

“@patrickbrownTFP: this is just the fifth season in Tennessee's program history the #Vols have won at least 23 games. the others: '00, '07, '08 and '10.”

I honestly can't believe this thread is even a reality right now. We're about to play for the Sweet 16, which is what everyone thought we should do this year, and someone is still contemplating how Hart might justify firing Martin.

Pretty sure some would be happy if C. Martin was fired after winning an NC2A championship.

I have no doubt either, considering at least one here has stated he shouldn't be back even if he made the Final Four.

I can see it now, St. Louis knocks off Louisville and Wichita State...Texas knocks off Michigan. We beat Mercer, Texas and St. Louis to make our first ever final four. I guarantee there would be posters saying how Martin lucked into a final four, or that it's not impressive because we didn't beat anybody.

I remain convinced the people that say crap like this never watched a minute of UT basketball before they heard that Pearls team was fun to watch. There's just no explanation for this creepy fascination with Pearl.

I'm fascinated by the motivation of players by Pearl which got us to the big dance 6 times, and within a basket of the Final Four. I'm fascinated that he was building a program that was beginning to attract the attention of blue-chip players all over the country. The enthusiasm, charisma and winning spirit he brought to UT was also fascinating ... and contagious.

Only because that's all the anti Cuonzos have left. If he loses it makes their day. If he's fired it makes their year. Their head also bobs up and down on Pearl schlong, they are not men but girlyboys. Twinks.

And then he had a BBQ at his house and had recruits over. He then told them he knew it was a violation but 'don't tell anyone'. I guess that was supposed to impress the Crafts. That's some great judgment I hope he carried with him to Aubarn. In fact it fits Aubarn like a glove. I hope the NCAA ***** him so hard up the *** he don't **** right for a month.

Good post. You probably captured most folks feelings. However, I never felt that way about Bruce. If he was a family member, it was the creepy uncle that showed up out of the blue, making slightly inappropriate comments to all the girls, talking loudly over my favorite tv shows, and interrupting me every time I tried to say something. But he brought Moon Pies so I didn't mind too much.

Folks shoulda come around earlier. I'm leary of YOU. Anyone who tries to undermine the program is the enemy. But since I'm still laughing hysterically, how about that Shaka Smart who is supposed to be better than Cuonzo. Where is he now? Where is he now? As Tony Montana would've said...'Look at you now'

Not only will he stick with Coach Martin, one more win and he will give him a big raise ( or someone will hire him away) and he will give him a 2 year extension at least.. With one more win, (sweet 16) Coach Martin drives the bus!

He deserves a raise from 1.2 to 2 iyam. Plus a contract to 2017 or 2018 or so.
