You’re #1 seed Tennessee BasketVols take on the entire SEC, beginning Friday, March 15th at 1ish P.M. to open the SEC tournament. 1st up. Miss St

Memphis has their own issues for sure but when you have to spend large portions of your tax revenue on economic development (because the state actively tries to relocate businesses to Nashville), roads (because the state won't fix whats their responsibility) and safety (because the Highway Patrol won't patrol here) - it leads to a continued spiral that's tough to escape...

legalize casino gambling & weed like Illinois did

Memphis legislators has tried to get casinos for decades and legalize/tax weed only to be rebuffed by Nashville legislators.

The only reason the state has a lottery is because of Steve Cohen (the only time I've ever agreed with him)...

I sent a letter to Cohen asking him if he could influence the transportation department to make the interstate speed limit on I240 around Memphis uniform all around instead of it being ridiculously 55 on the south side and 65 on the north side. He gave me some cockamamie answer regarding when the interstate was built they wanted people driving thru to be able to maintain the speed limit from everywhere else but the south side for locals needs to be slower.

Casinos aren't moving across the border unless we offer much better tax incentives than Miss. (Nashville would get those over Memphis all day, every day due to location and $$$). Last time I was in Tunica, one of the employees told us "Memphians cash their paychecks here, lose it all over the weekend, then come back next Friday and do it again". They already get the Memphians, no need to move to a higher crime area and lose business they already have. No clue about the weed stuff.

They'd move here in an instant if it was legal. Arkansas didn't offer Any incentives but Southland built anyways.

Southland has been eating Tunica's lunch without incentives solely due to its proximity....

Memphis has been asking for casinos for decades only to be shot down by Nashville. Same thing with weed...

So you're saying if casinos have a choice between Memphis and Nashville, they'll choose Memphis? I'm asking because if they ever do allow them, it'll be statewide.

Memphis tried to do the "Native American" workaround with Hard Rock but state legislature caught wind and stopped that. Nothing like seeing the dog track, Tunica County, and the Baptists come together to lobby state legislators...

Casinos would be put in both spots but given the demographics, Memphis would get one almost immediately. I'm sure Nashville would get a nicer, more upscale one that would take longer to build.

There’s not a single place on VN to talk intelligently about Memphis, SC or W TN, Mojo. Grizz thread is as close as you’ll get.

I'll leave it here since it all boils down to politics and never should've been here in the Zone in the first place.

I'll leave it at this re: econ dev. Between my role, knowing very well my counterparts at the other huge employers in town (as well as those in Metro Nashville) and who I am married to, it should make anyone who believes in fairness cringe at the absolute difference Shelby County is treated vs everyone else in the State.

This isn't a political R vs D debate. This is about equal, fair treatment. It's about consistency and applying existing law fairly and equitably. A business that wants to expand in Memphis should be treated the same by the state as one who wants to expand in Williamson County...
