What if UT is turned down again?

From what I have read, Patterson is willing to listen. Would he leave TCU, or would he use us as leverage to get him a better deal there? That is the big question.

I am rolling the dice and saying he isn't Mike Gundy. If he is like Gundy, we still took an offer to one of the top coaches out there. If he says no, I can deal with that, but him telling us no beats the Hell out of not asking and getting a rule breaker who thinks he is Don Juan, a half ass who thinks he is Robin Williams, or a cliche machine who thinks he is Wyatt Earp but maybe acts like Ike Clanton when nobody is looking.

Patterson is my first choice. That being said I heard Currie has spoke with him to Patterson has no interest in the job at all.

After Patterson I like Mullen. If all fails then take Miles, he has and can in the SEC.

Let's say it's 2012 all over again and UT is turned down by, oh let's say, about 10 coaches or so....

What does Currie do? Does he bring back Fulmer similar to how Snyder was brought back to KSU? Or, does he promote Brady Hoke to HC?

What are your thoughts?

Sadly and in a very scary way this could happen. Could.....

It could if they only go after Gruden/Kelly and established coaches at power 5 schools...

There are a number of good coaches who we might want but the timing just isn't right.

Justin Fuente would be great but he's in his second year at VT, has the program improving. I just don't see him wanting to move after just two seasons...he's just now got things set up to have his players, his recruits, etc...

I have doubts about Mullen's or Patterson's interest but at least they have been at their schools long enough to have honored their commitment...

Miles runs a worn out off tackle run oriented offense. Cannot stand to watch it. Hope he says no !!!! However, he would jump at the chance. I absolutely hope we do not get Miles...

No on Miles, but Mullen is a solid coach and would do well here. Personally I'd love to have Frost.

You guys are looking to high on the list. We are likely to hire a James Madison University or Mike BoBo type of hire and have the A.D. sell it to us as being good.....

Gruden is playing us and 75% of us know it. Kelly would be a bad hire for us but it is not an issue because he is Florida bound. Mullen has Miss State headed in the right direction, so why would he want to come here???? I doudt Va. Tech would let Justin F. leave. Petrino is a good coach but he would be Kiffin on steroids. Bad ethics. A.D. would never hire Miles because the fans would riot outside of his office. Kiffin would crawl back to U.T. but A.D. would not hire him. Patterson will remain in Texas where the fertile recruiting ground is. Peterson will stay in Washington
The more likely hires would be Mike Houston or Mike Norvell or Mike BoBo.

This is exactly my fear, that we have a number of public "no, thanks" from high-profile coaches and we end up (in the public's mind, at least) with the 4th or 5th or 6th choice.

With all this noise about Gruden, that's exactly what we're setting ourselves up for when/if he turns us down.

We will soon see what kind of salesman Currie is.

My thoughts are that I have no thoughts on it. I, like everyone else, have my personal favorites. However I see no point getting worked up over something I have absolutely no control over.

You shutdown the program and wait til the right can offered and will accept. Otherwise Tennessee football will never return to being champions on the field.

Or you walk the deer onto the field without knowing when the headlights will pull up and then UT's wrestling team walks on as a receiver corps for the new coach and dooms the S&C program from ever winning any kind of wrestling awards, much less in Atlanta.

It's happened before.

No matter how many coaches turn us down, if Currie brings back Fulmer, he has hired his last coach as AD at Tennessee.

Until Fulmer comes in and tears the SEC apart. Then Currie would be seen as the smartest AD in UT history. The facts are Fulmer should have never been fired when he was. This man has done so much for this university and people continue to hate on him, crazy.

A lot of coaches used us for raises in 2012 and I hope we learned our lesson. We were offering basically 10-15% more than what they were making and their schools had no problem matching. Want a proven winner to jump ship then make an offer his current AD would have to really think about matching. If we go after Patterson and don’t get him then there should be a report about him getting bumped to 7 million a year at TCU. The program has survived 3 bad hires, it won’t survive a 4th.

That's what I meant to imply...if our search is only established coaches we do stand a chance of being turned down but everyone...

I want Gruden but I know its highly unlikely.

I also agree that that program wont survive another terrible hire. If they stroll Norvell or Bobo out in front of the fans and pass him off as UTs next coach then Neyland deserves to be empty.

Patterson is my number 1a with Mullen 1b......not sure about gruden to be honest and don't see the fan fare there

It's not looking too likely on Gruden but how could you not see the fan fare? He would recruit nationally without trying? Every top QB would want to play for him. He's a household name for all football players. He would have a great staff would great coordinators and would be a guaranteed winner imo.

Tape your ankles. Stay away from bridges. Take your meds and relax. It does NOT matter WHo is hired (including JG) it will take a couple of years at least to know if it's good or bad. Left out, consuming large amounts of adult beverages will help you also......

Bottom line......you get what you are willing to pay for. If we want 4 more years of what we had, that is all we are willing to pay for . Throw the check book at Mullen and he will leave Miss State.

Ive been called insane before... but am i crazy to think Hugh Freeze should be considered? Yeah, he called a few escort services, maybe he just wanted someone to talk to? Honestly, looking at his body of work... every program he went to improved even in the SEC W.

Maybe he messed up, who of us hasnt? Someone will eventually take a chance on him again and improve themselves.

Hard to believe it's only been a week in this search. I truly think that Currie is no Hart, Hamilton, or Dickey. Whether it's Gruden, Patterson, Kelly, or someone else, I feel like he's working hard and has many irons in the fire right now and he knows this is a career breaker if he makes the wrong hire.

At some point he will have MAJOR sanction, show cause

There are some young coaches down in the ranks who will be stars - have to be lucky enough to pick the right one. Neal Brown at Troy stands out to me. They whipped LSU this year and he rebuilt that program from nothing. Norvell followed Fuente and has done well but Fuente is the man who turned Memphis around actually.

The Official Site of Troy Athletics

If the agents end up playing the Vols for raises for Mullen and others and if Jon Gruden chooses to be Lee Corso rather than the next Nick Saban, Neal Brown would be on my list for a serious evaluation.
