I don't have a problem with CGI as a tool. There is a ton of subtle uses for it that most don't even realize is CGI. When the it's over used (see Star Wars prequels) or just poor quality (see Green Lantern) it can take you out of the story.

I've heard the way JB did it is fantastic though.

I don't think the CGI itself was bad. It's just all there was. It was especially jarring considering the originals had so many good practical FX. Naturally there was a direct comparison which me the CG in the prequels seem hollow, overdone, and even to sterile (if that makes sense). Abrams did a good job mixing the 2.
