Tennessee considers withholding monoclonal antibody treatment from vaccinated citizens

As I've been told for months, the only people that need to worry COVID are the people at risk (elderly, obese, UNVACCINATED and immuno-compromised). So you have nothing to worry about if you're young and relatively healthy, regardless of vaccination status, and therefore don't need the treatment.

On a side note, isn't it unfortunate that the vaccine was sold to everyone as a way to protect your family in the case that you are infected... only to find out later that it isn't necessarily as advertised?

In what way?

Well for starters, the original incentive to get vaccinated was that you would not have to wear masks and that you would not get infected.

Obviously, that is not the case.

Not true. From the very start, health official said you could still get infected and even potentially still spread the virus. The entire point of the vaccines was to reduce the severity of the symptoms. So by spreading this lie, you are engaging in the very behavior that you are bashing.

What percentage?
I’m not the hospital’s informatics specialist/statistician, so I can’t tell you exactly. Less than half for sure.

The demographics of the population for my county show that the % of obese patients is lower than the state average at 30% (as compared to 32% statewide).

Not sure where you got those points, we were told getting infected while vaccinated would be exceedingly rare, spreading the virus while vaccinated would be exceedingly rare, and the entire point of vaccination was to stop the spread. Now it's morphed into the vaccine will help you be less sick from the virus you're most likely going to get.

For one, it's important to understand that much of what was said months ago was based on data against the original strains of COVID. The Delta variant has proven much more resistant to vaccines (though they still show significant efficacy against it). Secondly, what was actually said, was that developing symptoms, specifically severe symptoms, was exceedingly rare (like 95% efficacy). Considering that asymptomatic spread is rare, it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to understand that a vaccine that produces few or no symptoms when infected by COVID means the opportunity for spread is significantly reduced.

I think they need to be treated. Just make sure they take responsibility for the extra cost their choices are adding to the system.
Win - win.
And when vaccinated people are admitted they should be charged extra too right? I mean what if they weren’t masked when they contracted the virus or didn’t socially distance?

This should be the topic of discussion in this thread. The gov. has caused the situation by rationing the distribution of this treatment.

The markets should ration super expensive, life saving drugs to the wealthy. Vote Republican to save the rich!

That's taking it to far. Vax or no-vax is the line.

What makes you think this isn't misinformation?

from the article you quoted:

"That hasn't stopped the "news" of Tennessee's unvaccinated-only treatment-rationing from being touted in a number of national headlines. For instance: "Tennessee will now DENY vaccinated COVID-19 patients access to monoclonal antibody treatments as federal government begins limiting shipments of the drugs," the Daily Mail says.

OK, but that's the notoriously tabloidy Daily Mail. Let's check in with a mainstream news publication like USA Today or NBC News or Insider and…oh. "Tennessee limiting monoclonal antibody treatment to unvaccinated residents," reads an NBC News headline. "Tennessee Recommends Vaccinated Residents Lose Access to Monoclonal Antibody Treatment," claims USA Today. "Tennessee to reserve monoclonal antibody treatment for unvaccinated," touts an Insider headline."

the headlines claim that Tennessee had decided only unvaccinated people would be eligible for the MAb treatment. that is not the case.

All obese?
Far and above, the majority of poor outcomes are. I have actually been using this information as additional motivation when patients/families are not compliant with diet and exercise recommendations I provide. For a friend, it was the tipping point to have weight loss surgery.

It's a damn shame that more energy hasn't been put into encouraging healthy lifestyle and weight loss in the U.S. If people are scared enough to allow their businesses to be shut down, sports to be cancelled, and their kids muzzled, they MIGHT just finally be open to not drinking sugar, not eating at McDonalds, and getting off the couch to do some exercise.
