Snowboarding/Skiing/Trips/and all things snowsports thread

Believe me, there's nothing "fake" about dat ice. It's 100% frozen water.

If it's white and frozen, I can, and will, ski on it. I don't live in the alps. I live in SC. I'll take what I can get.

If you can afford it (money and time), you might want to look into going to WV. The difference was night and day from NC/TN resorts.

My ski days go like this:

Wake Up at 6am.
Go to work.
Knock off around 2.
Drive to NC.
Ski.
Get home around midnight.
Go to bed.
Get up at 6am.

Night skiing = smaller crowds and no sunburn.

WV is not within driving distance.

Going to Vail 1/10. Swa flight covered by points. Staying in penthouse in Lionshead for $375 per person total for 3 nights. Friend picking us up in Denver. About as cheap as possible to get there and stay. Can't wait. Need more snow though.

Leaving for a week in 19 days to Jackson Hole. Can't wait. Air fair, travel, stay was 1k so not too shabby. Also hitting Taos Ski valley in late Feb.

stay off the backside of Vail, it's treacherous

Sounds awesome, please share about how Jackson Hole is. Never been, considering this or Colorado or Utah for my daughter's introduction to skiing. Been to the other two.

Going up to Sugar this afternoon for some night-skiing tonight. Supposed to be cold, snowy and windy. Hope they don't shut the lifts down.

Do you prefer Sugar to Beech?

Man that is a great question. I love Beech, had a lot of great times there. Sugar is a little closer and that's where I started.

I hear about more people having bad experiences at Sugar than Beech, but I'd say they're pretty even. If it weren't a little ways further and they weren't calling for snow, we'd prob be going to Beech.

Fun facts - Beech is the highest resort in elevation east of the Mississippi River (including NE), and I believe Sugar has the longest continuous run east of the MR, though that may have changed.

I think upper and lower cup run at Snowshoe is longer

Wouldn't surprise me. I heard that a looooooong time ago.

Edit: I just checked skisoutheast.com, and they both claim their longest run is 1.5 mi.

Utah's about 30% cheaper than Colorado, if cost matters

Utah still have screwed up beer and alcohol laws? Last time I was there in the '80's the beer was watered down and you needed a manual to figure out how to get a mixed drink.

Skiing is strenuous, gotta be able to stay hydrated. :)

16 oz water and special cookies is much more enjoyable

I skateboarded for years, so I figured it would just naturally translate over to snowboarding WRONG! I couldn't even go 10 ft without falling. what's worse, I couldn't control my speed, so when I got going REALLY fast I would end up crashing and burning. So many bruises. Then I tried skiing. So much better. I was on the top slope by the end of day 1. Just pizza wedge it!

That's awesome.

I think beech is the better option. It has a little harder terrain and the lift is much faster. Both can get rediculously crowded.

I'm partial to beech anyway, worked in the ski shop during the winters when I went to etsu. Far drive but great gig.
