Except butch got high rankings b/c of volume too. You better be in the top 10 if you sign 30+ in a class.
I'd respectfully disagree with this. Butch's recruiting numbers were great for the 2014 - 2016 classes. They fell off after that.
2014: average star rating .895, natl rank = #7. While this class did have big numbers (32), average ranking was fine. The bigger problem was that there were a lot of busts from this class, but it also included Josh Malone and Derek Barnett. Overall, this class was probably overrated a bit, but less because of "quantity" and more b/c of a extraordinarily high percentage of busts.
2015: average star rating .895, natl rank = #4, 29 commits. This wasn't a huge class quantity-wise, but ranked #4. It included Kamara, Shy Tuttle, K-Mac, DK Jr., Drew Richmond, Jack Jones, Jauan Jennings, Quarte Sapp, Micah Abernathy, John Kelly, and Darrell Taylor. I think this holds up as a top 5 class even if we were to re-rate it based on current knowledge.
2016: average star rating .891, natl rank = #14, but on reduced numbers (22), so quality over quantity class. Included Nigel Warrior, JG, Kongbo, Tyler Byrd, Marquez Callaway, Daniel Bituli, Ryan Johnson, CFA, Brandon Johnson, Marcus Tatum.
2017 was where it dropped off with the average rating dropping to .872. Class included Trey Smith, Ty Chandler, Will Ignont, and Josh Palmer, so there were a few good players there, but very light on depth, and a lot of guys who haven't been huge contributors. And then, Butch's recruiting pretty much collapsed completely for 2018.
Overall, Butch's 2014 class was obviously overrated filled with busts, but 2015 and 2016 classes were excellent. Right now, I think Pruitt is recruiting at a level similar or even higher than the 2015 and 2016 classes, which is great, but really, if he can just coach them better than Butch, I'll be a happy Vol fan
