Juco offers

No JUCO years do count. Prep school does not. If they play both years at JUCO, they have 3 years to play 2. If they redshirt in JUCO they can have 3 years to play 3.

You're right. I was thinking of Bo Wallace playing 4 years in the NCAA and 1 in JUCO but I didn't realize he red shirted at Arkansas State.

I guess what I should have said was... Getting a JUCO recruit with 3 years of eligibility left is like getting a high school recruit and burning their red shirt on a few plays their freshman year (ie. Will McBride).

That is true! Of course if we hadn't been as beat up in the OLine, Will may not have gotten his concussion.

Wonder what this is? Some hints at Cade Mays?

i doubt it. apparently had a good talk with Pruitt and Fulmer at his school, but it was really just a pitch to simply not sign next week and allow him to be recruited after the dead period.

so not sure what news could be coming tonight. AT recommitted today. we got the GM from LSU.

i'd guess it has to be some recruiting news, somebody finally committing to the new staff. not sure who..maybe marcus murphy??

Still a decent stopgap measure for adding semi-developed talent until you can get HS recruits up to speed.

exactly. and there's some potential for some decent immediate help on the OL available, as well as some really good young talent that might get in the fold. there's a good batch of Juco and HS o linemen coming to visit this weekend. and i'd take 'em all right now....lol.

buys you time so you can still recruit the future, develop the youth on the roster and still have a functional rotation of players for the upcoming season.

can't do it like that all the time, but in a 1st year, where you know you don't have the depth at the LOS....

kind of a no brainer.

Seems like we haven't had a good O-Line in forever.. The last one I can remember was from the Dooley years.

Ju'Wuan James, Zach Fulton, Alex Bullard, Dallas Thomas, Antonio Richardson... Those guys were good.

Mostly we need REAL OL. If you offer 5 juco OL and 2 or 3 pan out you have done a GREAT job. Think about it, a juco is 20 or 21 years old. They have matured hopefully and played against people that are college sized. They are only going to count against you for 2 years and that is roughly the same time it takes a true freshman to be phsycally ready to play.

Very few come straight from HS like Trey Smith and play with the big boys. Cade Mays may be the next coming but chances are he has not played against anyone that is his size and faster in his entire HS career.

Look at Drew, he could be a monster against 5'10 220lb jelly roll but when you get in the SEC that is a diffrent animal all together.

It is a smart quick fix IF you evaluate them correctly and that is something we have not done well in a while.

This is what brohm did at Purdue to shore up the recruiting class last year. It was a quality stopgap. Results showed.

We won't be for long
You were responding to my comment about our recruiting class currently being ranked 39. You are right. Today we are 46. That's a heck of along way from Butch Jones territory.

We are now striving to become one of 6 SEC teams that are nationally in the Top 25 in scoring defense. Another Me Too to put it another way.

What we needed was a team with a kick butt offense which is totally lacking in the SEC in order to get back to where we once were. This coaching hire by Fulmer was totally blown in my opinion.

Majors was a genius at this. Fulmer did pretty well early on but later in his career I felt he went away from it and cost him. JUCO's are a great method to find 20 yr old players rather than a 17 to 18 yr playing against 20 yr olds.

Also not sure why everyone is so freaked out by the early signing period. It really is no different than previous years. Only difference is the early enrollees can go ahead and sign the LOI instead of waiting till February, where before they were enrolled but could not sign yet. Most kids will not graduate until May so they have to wait until the February signing day.

The term "early signing period" has everyone on edge. It's really ridiculous.

I am hoping Coach Pruitt does not undertake JUCO kids as "projects." Our program IMO is not at the point where we can afford that. If we offer a JUCO kid a slot that youngster had better be SEC ready in the head and body to compete for a starting position on our roster or we should not take them. Maybe on down the line we can do that but not now, we have a program that was n ot competitive in the SEC we went 0fer and that is an anathema.

There are two SEC teams in the CFP. Both are led by defensive minded coaches. Those gimmicky offenses are great if you like a good 77-3 win over Coastal Carolina and an 8-4 record. I'd rather have good old fashioned hit you in the face and break your will to fight smash mouth football. That's what we got in Coach Pruitt.

As far as where this class is ranked we can revisit the topic after signing day if you like.

CJP wants to win now and is not calling this Year Zero. By bringing in these JUCO's he's getting a more mature and college ready player who can contribute now. This will especially pay dividends on the OL. He's got about 4-5 coming in to give us a look. Here's to a 1,500 yard RB next season.

You're doing it wrong. The early Aug in period doesn't mean you have to enroll early. For example UT has a committee who is signing in Dec. but taking his OV in January.

The ESP is a huge change.
