It is a great rule with two purposes.

First, it is in effect for safety reasons.

Second, the kids have not taken strapping their helmets on seriously. How many times have we seen helmets pop off the past two years? It has caused games to drag on for fixing the helmets.

It will cost teams wins, in some way.
Imagine brays helmet coming off against Fla on a 2nd down play with a minute left. 3rd and 5, no timeouts, down 4 on their 20. Just an example.

It's a dumb rule, sorry. They can just put their helemt back on without going to the sideline.

Ask the Seahawks' DE about what happens without a helmet on. He spent time getting a broken tooth worked on. And that was just a celebration with his own team. It IS a good rule. If these guys would've done what they were supposed to without the penalty, then the rule wouldn't have been put into effect.

The sideline part is to encourage the players to wear the right gear/strap on correctly the first time which hopefully helps prevent some concussions or other head injuries that might have otherwise resulted from loose/improperly sized helmets.

Please give us MORE, MORE, MORE Rules !! (same kinda thing Please give us MORE, MORE, MORE government)

Protect us Please.

Eventually it will revert to Flag Football with no touching allowed ! (kinda the same thing with our Government, soon the People will have no control and we will revert to a Socialist, Facist or Communist run country)

Clemson may have just gone for it from the one up 4 with a minute to go vs Auburn, but Taj Boyd had to come out because his helmet popped off (for the 3rd time)...

Nothing wrong with the rule. First dont complain about the under 2 minutes crap. If the QB loses his helmet, yes he will have to sit out a play, but also the clock is stopped to make sure he goes off the field, and then starts with the ready for play. Buckle them up properly and its rare the helmet comes off.

As for anyone complaining that Clemson didn't got for it on the 1 because of not having Boyd, thats bubcus. If your backup QB cant take a snap and hand it off, or dive forward, drop his scholarship.

That's ridiculous. A backup qb is to come in at the critical times of a game and you don't think there could be snap or communication issues due to it? You think he couldn't pull away from the center a tad early, just due to nervousness, or pressing too hard?

Does it not seem like helmets are coming off far more frequently or am I just noticing it more due to the new rule?

They've been popping off for the last 3-4 years, but they just used to put them back on. Now, the clock stops, and they sub.

Here's the thing, concussions and injuries aren't really an issue of the helmet popping off. As a matter of fact, just doing a quick thought process, I don't recall many injuries that occur when it comes off. It's as if it takes the force of the energy and disperses it similar to a NASCAR falling to pieces in a wreck. The head issues primarily come from a strapped in helmet that protects the skull and causes the brain to rattle around and bounce off the skull.
I don't see how this stupid rule addresses the true issues at all.

I think they should start making the players wear Hans devices. That'll keep those helmets from popping off! By Gosh!

Calling plays with the lead from the 1 yard line is not that difficult no matter what the down is. Its either, QB sneak or dive to the TB. To further add to the KISS principle, run it on a quick count because there isnt a single reason to draw out the cadence.

Just wait till next year when they take out punt returns or something stupid. The new kickoff rule is dumber then the helmet rule imo.

I personally hate this rule. I saw it 3-5 times when it happened to Tahj Boyd in the game today. each time he'd go off the field for a play, tighten his helmet, even end up switching helmets all together and it would still happen. I get the safety issue, but they should just stress that everyone tightens them up and snap them in rather then make them sit a play when it isn't preventable.

So at this rate next year the game will be played on NCAA 2014 so nobody can get hurt, well except of the occasional thumb cramps.
