1. Chris Petersen

2. Brent Venables

3. Scott Frost

Then you better have Frank Wilson on speed dial in case he ends up with a really strong season, same with DJ Durkin & Chad Morris.

The only reason I list Peterson is because I secretly hope he's unhappy enough at Washington that he considers a move to a more "prime time" school. He's a west coast guy through and through but he's extremely respected in coaching circles. He'd be a slam dunk hire, but everyone knows that.

I'd give Shaw a call too, though I think most reasonable Vol fans know he's not leaving his Alma Mater. If we're throwing out feelers then we should also look into Gary Patterson, Paul Chryst, & Larry Fedora - even though Fedora and Patterson have turned us down in the past, things may have changed since then.

Petrino - successful SEC coach

Mullen - not as successful as Petrino, but still has SEC cred as coordinator and HBC.

Bo Pelini - look at Nebraska since he left

Brent Venables
Scott Frost
Tee Martin

Maybe Chip Kelly. Not totally sold on him succeeding in Knoxville, but maybe.

Most of the other names people are saying are unrealistic pipe dreams. Gruden has been out of coaching for almost 10 years. He's never coming back.

Jim Bob Cooter is a great offensive mind, but has virtually no experience in the college game, no head coaching experience, no recruiting experience, etc. Could have high upside, but he's extremely high risk given all that.

Petrino would take the job in a heartbeat, but I don't want him.
