democrats more intelligent people as a whole than republicans?

Law of averages: both sides have equal numbers of intelligent folk and idiots.

I disagree. When the sample is self-selected (not random) there are going to be inherent characteristics that determine alignment. For instance the D's tend to attract more teachers, minorities, younger demographics, and the R's tend to attract more business leaders, religious folk, etc. All those groups are going to have different levels of average intelligence. I don't assume to know which party has smarter people on average, but I'm certain one of them does.

Not necessarily when there are two general parties. The smaller parties tend to have more intelligent people because they people involved have actually done research to understand the party. Examples: libertarian, green, demsocialism, etc. Because the two parties attract different intelligent people, it still averages out.

why must there be a difference? The labels are so broad (Dem/Rep). All kinds of people primarily identify with one or the other but that changes for some individuals.

Primarily, it is about values and world view. I don't see any direct link to intelligence.

Put another way, my guess is you will find a complete distribution of intelligence scores within each party affiliation and the mean's wouldn't be significantly different or particularly indicative of someones values/worldview.

I wouldn't even want to know the results if we could measure party intelligence*. I think one of the biggest problems with politics is that we think we are really smart. We have many societal problems. For whatever reason when we recognize problems the first (and sometimes only) impulse is to have government fix it. "There should be a law...." Everyone has a solution. We think we can just pass a law and achieve our objectives. It never works out this way, but we don't learn. We can't see past our own brilliance to realize that we can't centrally plan society.

*unless the results are that we are all equally dumb. I fear that the party who is found to be "smarter" would feel that it's an endorsement of all their ideas.

I was having a discussion with a friend of mine who is in the movie business about how so many famous actors are liberal and he said the reason why 85% of Hollywood is liberal is because many actors are educated and the left is a much more valid political position than anything the right has to offer, with its denial of science and pandering to the rich at the expense of the poor. Hollywood is liberal because most intelligent people are leftist and most intelligent people are leftist because it is the RIGHT way to think.

Would you say that this is true? Are most of the smarter people democrats? I guess it does kind of make sense. It doesn't change my position as a centrist but it does kind of make me glad I'm not a republican.

What you have just described are groups that feel they need a unified voice to reach their goals versus groups that want to have the (maybe perceived) freedom to succeed or fail on their own. I seriously doubt that either group has a significant higher average intelligence.

However, I would think that the party with the most bandwagon members at any point in time may see their average sag somewhat.
