Coaching buyout breakdowns

It would need to work both ways. If you win 12 the buyout is increased by 50%.

That said most of the contracts have bonus dollars built in for performance. The buyout is to protect the coach.

The contract also has a payment by the coach if they leave early. That is to protect the school from a very successful coach who goes elsewhere for more money.

Some jobs, coaches, CEO's of large companies, etc. are not paid the same way that most folks are paid. It is the nature of those jobs. Tennessee's situation is no different.

Those of you who are wanting a new coach - trust me the salary and buyout for a new coach would more than likely be more than what Jones has today. And you all will be complaining about that day 1 as well.

Thanks for the expert advice.

Dooley had the worst contract for us. Kiffen was just a matter of another coaching search...that obviously went bad.

What you probably aren't including are the assistant coach salaries for CBJ which if all were released would be another $10 millionish.

All of the assistants have mitigation clauses in their contacts. Almost all of the current coaching staff would find employment with other schools should a coaching change occur.

That means the buyout would decrease compared to what they would currently be earning.

How many of those are out there? Not many. It could be done. It would have to be done from the bottom up. It would never start from the top down.

Bottom wagging the head? Not how it's done. :)

We need to absolutely not extend butch's contract and add to the buyout. He makes a crap load of money and is not respected in coaching circles or the media. I do appreciate the job he's done elevating the talent and stabilizing the program. But at this point, he's reached his ceiling. He's not an X's and O's guy and he's a terrible sideline decision maker in crucial times. Also, he's likely the most conservative coach in all of college football...which has a lot to do with why he's not a good game manager. Aggressive will win 8 out of 10 times and the more you go conservative the more predictable you become.
If butch were to get another job and volunteerily leave...that would be The best scenario for us.

Or be wiped out completely depending on their contract at their new school. Total staff buyout wouldn't be anywhere close to $10 million, after the offset of the assistants salaries at their new jobs.

We got lucky when CBJ was hired as Chaney and Pittman were essentially low cost due to their rehires but I think we paid out for Sal who went to FSU.

The way Dooley's contract was worded we paid him regardless.
