CBS says play-in games an insult

Was there this much outrage the past 3 season over the addtional play-in games? Or is it only because UT is playing in one that it's now unfair?

I thought it was stupid to expand pass 64 from the get go. This just put it under the microscope here. It's just dumb co 11 seed.

Yall realize TN would still be in the tournament if it were 4 years ago before the first four right?

Xavier and NC State would be the two teams that wouldn't have made it and we would be the 11 seed Vs. Umass and Iowa would likely be the 12 seed Vs. St. Louis.

It IS an insult. Either make the 64 team bracket or wait on the NIT to be the 65th best team. It is just stupid to call a "play-in" game the 1st round of a tournament. It's just lipstick on a pig.

Tomorrow is the first round the way I look at it, don't give a damn what they call it, tomorrow is the first round, it is a joke to call the 4 games the first round, why don't the NCAA call the first 4 play in games like they do and then say the first rounds starts Thursday, makes to much sense I guess.:good!:

I don't know why the NCAA went to 68 teams anyway, we have been playing 64 for 30 years, 64 is the right number the NCAA will keep adding, in 10 years it will be the field of 80, if it is not broke, don't fix it, before anybody says we would not have make it so what, that would be our Team fault.

Me predicts that if the Vols win tonight the sentiment here will largely be that the play-in system is great, since it what got you in at all. Whereas if Iowa wins there will be great gnashing of teeth and wailing at the injustice of it all.

Not just Tennessee fans.

We've averaged top 5 in attendance and have the facilities to be great

Even Iowa fired Alford... he's now at a better program with UCLA.

Iowa actually cares enough about winning to find an improvement. I don't see why Vols fans should accept we can't be a powerhouse in basketball. Tennessee offers more than Iowa and it's sad when Iowa expects more than Tennessee.

Disagree completely. Tenn. Is a football school and that is just life. Pearl was a surprise and did great. We will compete and go to the NCAA some of the time as we have done for forty years. Now if we get lucky with a mid major coach we might do better again.

Like it or not, we are in the tournament and have a good chance to win some games and be a legitimate tourney team. I will be pulling for the kids until the bitter end. I just hope that at some point the administration will do what they need to do to make us an elite team who expects to make the tournament every year with a high seeding. With the facilities and 20k plus filling TBA there are no excuses not to be relevant. It only takes the will to do it. It will pay off many times over in revenue, fan support, scholarship money...you name it. Will they step up to the plate? I sure hope so.

I think the selection system/criterion needs to be updated. 13-19 is a joke.

So who decides how the smaller conference auto bids go to?

UTC Lady Mocs HC Jim Foster said he thinks conference tourney champs getting auto bid makes regular season meaningless.

At the time, Lady Vols were 26-3 with wins over Bama and Auby and losses to Lady Vols, 20 win Minn, and an outlier to Hawaii .

The term "play in" makes the teams in it feel inferior, just like changing D1 & DI-AA made smaller schools feel inferior to the big boys....well, guess what! THEY ARE INFERIOR! Just another PC ploy by the NCAA.

Every sport is trending to create soft kids...boo hoo you lost...but here's your trophy...entitlements are exactly what play in games are.

That's what you came up with?

While that nonsense is certainly happening, it is mostly only found below high school. Go play any real sport above high school and tell me winning is an entitlement. the 68 team tournament has absolutely nothing to do with the socialistic movement of the past decade. Sorry.

In this case, all about the $$$$

Or they don't keep score until the kid is in middle school. Breeds a non - competitive attitude for a lot of the kids.

I have always thought that they need to take away an automatic bid to the tournament just for winning your conference.

Give the auto bid to regular season champs NOT conf tourney champs. Problem solved.

Yeah I've always thought some of the mid major conferences should just step down to Div. 2 and remove the automatic qualifier. Let's just take the best 64, ranked 1 through 64, with 1v64, 2v63, etc. It would be the highest quality tournament possible. There probably would have already been a 16 upset a 1 in that scenario.

I can't wait to hear this conversation in football when a 8-4 Big 10 team makes it to the Rose Bowl and eventually wins a NC b/c of the tournament. It would be bad enough if the NC came from the Big 10, but one with a record as described would be down right nauseating (and it could happen).

This type of thinking is wrong, is Florida not a football school? Are Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan not all football school as well?

There is no reason to think that we can't be the same. Why should we settle for only making the NCAAT for some of the time? A good coach can win here, THAT has been proven, there is no reason we can't go out and get a good/great coach and be in the NCAAT every year.

Some of our VN posters need to tell CBS that this is not a play-in game. We are in the tourney. We just have to beat IA in order to be seeded.

The NCAA keeps amazing me with stupid moves.

When they decided to move from 64 to 68 teams they should have changed to seeding from 1- 16 to 1-17. Let the 16 and 17 play in the first round and be done with it. IMO it is beyond stupid to force two teams to play to be seeded 11. TN nor IA should not be put in this position. It is a play-in game period. How did they chose a play-in game for an 11 seed ? Pure stupidity imo.

Don't call it a play in game. BTO will have a heart attack.

Although we all know that's what it really is, ESPN supports this by not allowing you to choose the winner of the game.

They do, and they're especially stupid for conferences with only one bid. Why punish a team that's been great all season by sending some team that showed up for 3 days?

You can go through life being wrong, doesn't faze me.

I am curious though, what will your argument turn to if we win tonight?
