If you are interested in a short detour the NC Zoo is about and hour away in Asheboro and it is the wife and kid’s favorite zoo they’ve ever been to.

We never visited Sicily so I can’t compare that. But I can tell you the bigger cities like Naples, Florence and Rome were not my fave. You have to do at least a day in Rome but I would hit the high spots and move on.

I agree with the Amalfi coast but would also like to add that Cinque Terre and Sienna were my two favorites from my trip to Italy.
