Game Thread Lady Vols vs Appalachian State

She should be told to never shoot anything but hook shots and clean layups. if she doesn't, then run her legs off on the stairs of Neyland.

Take away from the game.

1. Another slow start. :thud:

2. Jordan Reynolds should not be a starter. :eek:k:

3. Alexa Middleton should be our Starting Point Guard for the rest of the Season PERIOD. :eek:k:

4. Diamond Deshields body language is annoying.

5. Good reps for Shaquilla Nunn. :clapping:

6. Jaime Nared has been our most consistent scorer to date. :clapping:

7. Mercedes Russell has an height advantage that she seldom uses to her advantage. :eek:hmy:

8. Kortney Dunbar is our 3pt specialist and unfortunately that is it. :dunno:

9. Coach Holly Warlicks recruitment of Kamera Harris was to save face for having ZERO recruits doing the regular signing period.

Good win Lady Vols.

Stanford got next will the Lady Vols win? :dunno:

why has Russell never learned a hook shot?

Part of the issue is lack of a Biggs coach. We looked good considering the team we were playing. After the first quarter the team seem to become more into the game. Again, we need to bring the same attitude against Stanford and the SEC for 4 quarters. I still believe that we have the horses to win against top 25 teams if the ladies play at the level they are capable of. The personnel on this team is top 10 caliber as long as their heads are in the right place.

she looks good when she takes the shot, she needs to improve on sinking them and taking more of em

I would give Russell a sky-hook for her strong-side pivot (left pivot) and a Patrick Ewing "Fade away" for her reverse pivot or weakside pivot (right)

It's not that hard to do.

Are you guys kidding me .OMG WE CAN NOT BE WATCHING THE SANE TEAM.ever since russel has been at tenn she had a hook shot that was her go too they are trying to advance that

Her go-to move dating back to her freshmen year was a lob pass to the left of the basket that was out of reach for her defender that she could grab while facing the basket and dump in for an easy two points. She used the hook shot more last year, but man is that an ugly shot that has very little touch. If she's at the right angle, she could bounce it hard off the backboard to score, but she tends to hit the shot short when defended by players that are taller than 6'1 or 6'2.

Agree with the other posters that say she needs a skyhook. Izzy had a beautiful one that was unblockable and was a thing of beauty, and that's being way shorter than Mercedes. If Russell could hit that shot consistently, she would be able to score one-on-one whenever she wanted to.

After a torrid start by her standards, Jordan's numbers have settled more to what has been her historical average: 5.9 ppg shooting 34% FG and 23% 3PTFG. FG% is a career low. Sadly, her PPG as a senior is her second highest of her career. The likelihood that she will improve these numbers against SEC competition is probably non-existent, which brings us to your next point...

I've always liked Alexa as a PG. I love her passing instincts, but feel like alternates between thinking too much and second guessing her decision making vs. playing with complete abandon. If she can find that happy middle ground and improve her defense against SEC-level guards, I think she can provide a nice upgrade at PG (which unfortunately isn't saying much...).

Kamera...Kamera...I had such hopes for you. I'm afraid that if she cannot be productive against the Appalachian States and ETSUs of the schedule, then she will spend a lot of time on the bench during SEC play. I can see why Holly recruited her...if only to have a warm body on the bench in case Russell AND Nunn were unable to play or in foul trouble. But I sense that especially with post reinforcement coming in next year, her career as a LV may be as a practice partner. Right now, she does not appear to be a BCS-caliber player.

Harris is a project player with a capital P. She needs a lot of development on her mobility, footwork, and being able to function in a faster tempo game. Given her 28 block game, I had hoped she would have been a more athletic player (but perhaps unpolished); honestly, other than her size, her athleticism is suspect. I have seen players get a whole better with off season work and perhaps, she can follow that path. But she desperately needs a good trainer to work in speed and agility.

I think Alexa has some potential as PG but again she has real trouble matching up against more athletic guards, not only defensively but also in terms of handling a pressing defense when it is thrown at her. She becoming a solid player who can look like an AA against weaker comp. but she may not be ready for prime time as a PG.

The better hope is that Jordan finds her mojo or Holly has DD handing the ball more. We saw that back in the day when Candace was often the de facto point guard.

Because, Appy State was so overmatched on the size and athletic dimension, it is hard to draw to many conclusions about the state of the LVs and if they have redressed some deficiencies from their losses to Texas and Baylor.

The slow start and lackuster defending of the first quarter is a cause for concern. But, the team was trying to get into the paint more with slash and drive moves and we had several fast break opportunities. It remains to be seen if the LVs can make those kinds of plays against higher caliber teams. DD, Nared, and Jordan should all be capable though.

I agree with you and Amb that Harris is in fact a project and with Dean's (my opinion) inability to truly develop Post Players she will become another Nia Moore (unless she transfers out to another school)

The potential is there (she sets good screens, box out well, and good help defense, she also seems to be able to make layups/put backs which seems a little shaky with other players)

Some players need confidence as we can see that with Nunn developing hers and has shown what she is capable and some players just aren't practice players (Allen Iverson anyone?) so if we are waiting for them to be such in order to play, they may never play.

There have been stretches (with both Nunn and Harris) where they have had their man sealed off and MeMe, or Jordan, or Jamie could not get them entry pass.

In game like this Russell (Jamie & Diamond) should have sat more to get other players time to get a feel for things.

As a coach you can't get mad if injuries or other things occur in game and a player isn't ready to play because you dont trust whether or not they can play......If you don't trust/have faith in them to produce for you, you shouldn't have given them a scholarship

Nunn is on her way to becoming a really good pick-up for the LVs. She is adjusting to the speed of play week by week. She is not going to be an offensive force but she is a good effort player who will some boards, loose balls, get a few clean-up points, and work hard on defense. And she seems to be really excited to wear a LV uniform. I am glad she is here.

You are seeing some positives in Harris that i have missed., I will have to watch her more closely if and when she gets on the court.

Don't get to excited folks that was App State wait till some better talent and better coaching come in hear on Sunday then Holly will be back to saying "I don't know...?" Stanford by 20+

I just hope that they will be competitive. That is all that I ask.....play the game with emotion and like they are happy to being on the court.

I see Holly has lowered your expectations as well, don't worry she has done that for the entire fan base.
