FreakNotes: Wiggins still hurt; Tuttle getting live reps; Vols can’t take step back

Tennessee Vols Football News

August 25, Friday

  • I hope everyone is having a fantastic Friday. We’re only 10 days away from Tennessee Vols football! — Countdown thread.
  • Tennessee landed a big commitment last night, from 4-star GA cornerback Jaycee Horn. The Vols’ 2018 class is now up to 23 commits. Despite mixed opinions on how this team may perform on the field this year, Butch Jones keeps chugging full throttle ahead on the recruiting trail. The group of secondary players in this class, including Horn, is especially impressive.
  • Four Vols were named to the Senior Bowl Watch List: Todd Kelly Jr., Evan Berry, Trevor Daniel and Ethan Wolf.
  • Butch said yesterday that Shaq Wiggins is still hurt, but is expected back next week.
  • Tennessee’s Southeastern Conference basketball schedule was announced yesterday.
  • Derek Barnett got the start at defensive end last night for the Philadelphia Eagles. It doesn’t appear he was credited for any tackles in the box score, though.
  • It seems unlikely that we’ll see him against Georgia Tech, but Butch Jones said that Shy Tuttle took some live reps yesterday. “Shy continues to work,” Jones said. “He did some live reps today, and I think the more live reps he can get, the more confidence he brings about. But also from a conditioning standpoint, as well.” — forum discussion: Shy Tuttle took live reps yesterday.
  • Everyone’s pal, Paul Finebaum, points out that Tennessee has a 3% chance of winning the SEC, according to ESPNStatsInfo. Reece Davis was on Finebaum’s show and said, “Butch Jones is a good coach, a really good coach. But I think they missed a window last year, some of it through performance, and some of it through bad luck. They were decimated by injury on the defensive side. I don’t think anybody is expecting them to do what they hoped they would do a year ago, but they can’t take a giant step backwards.”

  1. Freak – is there any way to add a “like” button to these updates? I would like them every day, but figure it gets old to say “great job” or “thanks!” every day in the comments…

  2. thanks Freak…honestly, I hope Shy doesn’t play against the Tech Cutblockers…hope can get ready to go….need him…Horn was huge…next thing you know we’ll be DBU…have a good day, and

    GO BIG ORANGE!

  3. TECH returns 16 starters from a team that went 3-0 vs the SEC east last year. This will be a very difficult game because of the option offense and the fact that is almost a home game for them. Butch & co. had all summer to figure out how to stop the triple option- they will held accountable for Tech backs running untouched for long gains. At first, I thought this would be a relatively easy game, now I am less than confident in a Vol victory. Kirkland was the player we could least afford to lose and watching Techs coach in interviews this last week – well he doesnt seem very nervous about playing the Vols. The fact he (Johnson) is so happy makes me wonder why. Go Vols and win a close one.

  4. We need great play from the D tackles- them holding their ground is the basic key to stopping the triple option.
